Copa AirlinesTocumenConnections
Tocumen International Airport (PTY) handles over 14 million passengers annually as Copa’s primary hub. If you fly Copa in Central America, you will almost certainly pass through it — often more than once. Here’s what frequent Copa travelers know about making it work, and when to look at alternatives.
Minimum connection times at PTY
Copa officially requires a 60-minute minimum connection time at Tocumen, but experienced travelers recommend 90 minutes during peak periods (June–August, December–January). The airport is efficient but Terminal 2’s gates require a bus connection, which adds 15–20 minutes on its own. If your inbound flight is even slightly delayed, a 60-minute connection becomes stressful.
The premium lounge option
Copa’s Club Copa lounge at Tocumen is a genuine improvement over waiting at the gates — hot food, showers, reliable Wi-Fi and quiet seating. Business class tickets and Copa ConnectMiles elite members have access. If you’re spending more than 2 hours at PTY, it’s worth the day-pass fee.
Skipping the hub altogether
The most efficient way to travel between two points in Central America is direct — no hub, no minimum connection, no rebooking risk. AeroRide’s private charter network connects every airport in the region point-to-point: SJO to MGA in 90 minutes, SAP to GUA in 45 minutes, BZE to SJO in under 2 hours. For time-critical business travel or groups of 3+, the total cost often equals or beats Copa plus hotels for missed connections.
