Surf El Tunco and La Libertad — El Salvador’s Pacific coast generates long-period swells with offshore winds and point breaks that rival anything in Central America. Premium surf camps, private coaching, and the full guide.
El Salvador: The Last Great Uncrowded Quality Surf Destination
El Salvador’s surf reputation suffers from the same perception problem as the country itself. International surf media have historically underreported the Pacific coast’s quality, leaving the breaks here less crowded than equivalent quality waves in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, or Mexico by a factor of perhaps 5 to 1. For the surf traveler who has exhausted the obvious destinations and wants quality without the crowd, El Salvador is the answer.
The Breaks: A Guided Tour
Punta Roca — La Libertad
The most prestigious surf break in El Salvador — a right-hand point break in the fishing port of La Libertad that has produced multiple Central American champion surfers and is considered one of the finest point breaks in the region. The wave breaks over a rock shelf at a consistent angle, generating long rides (50–100+ meter faces on a good swell) with multiple sections offering both speed sections and power turns. Best from December through April with offshore winds; surfable year-round but larger and more powerful June through October.
El Sunzal — The Most Consistent Break
A right-hand point break 3 kilometers west of El Tunco, generally considered the most consistent surf spot in El Salvador and one of the most forgiving quality waves in Central America. El Sunzal works in almost any swell direction and handles a wide range of sizes from 1 meter (excellent for intermediate improvement) to 2+ meters (challenging and fast for advanced surfers). The wave is longer than Punta Roca and more user-friendly.
El Tunco — Hub of Surf Culture
El Tunco itself is a beach break rather than the finest wave in the area, but it is the social and organizational hub of El Salvador surf tourism. The village has the highest concentration of surf camps, board rental operations, instructors, and surf-focused accommodation. It is also the most accessible break from San Salvador (45 minutes). Beginners will find El Tunco manageable; advanced surfers will use it as a base for exploring El Sunzal, Punta Roca, and the lesser-known breaks further along the coast.
Playa Las Flores — The Eastern Secret
On El Salvador’s eastern coast near the Gulf of Fonseca, Playa Las Flores (also called La Costa del Sol) is an extraordinarily beautiful palm-fringed beach with a consistent right-hand point break that receives less visitor traffic than the La Libertad zone and offers a more removed, authentic experience. The drive from San Salvador (2 hours) is worth it for surfers who want to find El Salvador without El Tunco’s surf camp density.
Luxury Surf Camps
Surf Ranch Hotel — El Zonte
The finest surf-focused accommodation in El Salvador — a boutique property in El Zonte (Bitcoin Beach) with ocean-view rooms, a pool, an excellent restaurant, and direct access to El Zonte’s right-hand reef break (beginner to intermediate). Private coaching available. The combination of quality accommodation, Bitcoin community immersion, and good waves makes Surf Ranch the most interesting surf hotel in the country. From $150/night.
La Cocotera Resort — Costa del Sol
A beachfront boutique resort on the Costa del Sol, 2 hours from San Salvador, with 10 cabañas directly on the Pacific, a restaurant sourcing fresh fish daily, and a genuine sense of remove from urban El Salvador. Not primarily a surf camp — more a sophisticated beach retreat that happens to be near excellent waves. From $200/night.

✦ The Complete Surf Day
Depart San Salvador 5:30 AM. Arrive El Sunzal or Punta Roca before 6 AM for the best morning glass — the offshore winds are strongest at dawn. Surf until 10 AM. Breakfast at a local comedor (the surf scene in El Salvador runs on pupusas and coffee). Second session 4–6 PM as the afternoon wind picks up again. Return to San Salvador or your surf camp accommodation. This rhythm — two sessions divided by the midday heat — is how El Salvador surfs.
