Tropic AirMaya Island AirBelizeComparison
Belize has two domestic scheduled airlines: Tropic Air and Maya Island Air. Both serve the same core routes, fly similar aircraft and charge comparable prices. The competition between them is good for travelers — but the differences between them are smaller than the differences between either one and a private charter.
Where they’re the same
Both airlines fly from BZE and TZA to SPR, PLJ, DGA and PND. Both use Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft. Both charge $70–100 per person one-way to Ambergris Caye. Both have similar punctuality records and are operated by experienced local crews who know Belize’s weather and terrain intimately.
Where they differ
Tropic Air generally operates higher frequency on the BZE–SPR route, with departures nearly every hour during peak hours. Maya Island Air tends to have more capacity on some Southern Belize routes (Dangriga, Punta Gorda). Some travelers prefer Maya Island Air’s customer service; others swear by Tropic Air’s consistency. Both are trustworthy choices.
When private charter beats both
Neither Tropic Air nor Maya Island Air serves Belmopan/Cayo (BCV), Independence (INB), Corozal (CZH) or Sarteneja (SJX) on regular scheduled routes. For any of these destinations — or for a multi-stop itinerary combining say Ambergris Caye, Placencia and Punta Gorda — private charter with AeroRide is the only practical option.
