Golfito — Costa Rica

Golfito was built by the United Fruit Company in the 1930s and abandoned by it in 1985, and the town still carries the shape of that history: a strip of wooden company housing along the water, a deep natural harbour, and a hinterland of rainforest that closed back over the plantations within a generation. It is one of the more atmospheric places in Costa Rica, and one of the least visited by international travellers — which is precisely the argument for it.

The airport sits at 15 metres elevation on the flat ground behind the harbour, with the forested ridge of Piedras Blancas National Park rising immediately behind. At 1,400 metres by 20 metres, its runway is among the longest of Costa Rica's domestic-only fields, which gives it operational flexibility that the beach strips do not have.

Runway 13/31, 1,400 metres by 20 metres, asphalt, at 15 metres elevation. ICAO: MRGF. Coordinates: 8°39′13″N, 83°10′53″W. Daylight operations.

Fourteen hundred metres at near sea level, with a water approach into a sheltered gulf, makes GLF one of the easier fields in the southern zone. For groups travelling with dive gear, surfboards or fishing tackle, that extra runway matters: weight and volume constraints here are meaningfully looser than at Drake Bay or Puerto Jiménez.

Getting there

Golfito Airport — Getting there

Three reasons, in roughly this order.

Pavones. Forty-five minutes to an hour south by road, at the mouth of the Río Claro, is one of the longest left-hand point breaks on earth — rides of several hundred metres on the right swell, which arrives with the southern hemisphere winter from roughly April to October. Surfers plan entire trips around it, and the drive from San José is long enough that most who go, fly.

Zancudo. A narrow spit of grey sand between the gulf and a mangrove estuary, about an hour from Golfito, with almost nothing on it but a handful of cabinas and some of the best inshore sportfishing in the country — roosterfish, snook, cubera snapper.

Piedras Blancas National Park. The rainforest immediately behind the town, contiguous with Corcovado's ecosystem and holding much of the same wildlife with none of the permit queues. Some of the lodges on the roadless northern shore of the Golfo Dulce — reached by boat from Golfito in twenty to forty minutes — are among the best wildlife properties in Costa Rica.

Golfito also retains its Depósito Libre, a duty-free zone created to support the town after United Fruit left. It is a Costa Rican institution, largely irrelevant to foreign visitors, and worth knowing about only because it explains the traffic on the road in.

The drive, and the gulf problem. San José to Golfito is roughly six and a half hours by road. The charter is about 48 minutes.

But the more interesting comparison is local. Golfito and Puerto Jiménez face each other across the Golfo Dulce, perhaps 15 kilometres apart in a straight line. By road, the journey is well over three hours around the head of the gulf. By boat it is around 30 minutes; by air, a matter of minutes. Any itinerary combining the two sides of the gulf should be built around this.

Connections. Golfito connects by charter to San José (~48 min), and locally to Puerto Jiménez, Drake Bay, Palmar Sur and Quepos. It is also the practical Costa Rican staging point for onward travel towards the Panamanian border and the Chiriquí highlands.

Piedras Blancas National Park, immediately inland. The Golfito National Wildlife Refuge, which wraps around the town itself and can be walked from the main street. Casa Orquídeas, a private botanical garden on the gulf's northern shore reachable only by boat. Pavones and Punta Banco to the south. Zancudo's beach and estuary. And the gulf itself — dolphins year-round, humpback whales seasonally, and calm water almost every morning.

When to fly

When to fly

The southern Pacific zone is wet. Mornings are typically the clearest window; convective cloud and rain build from midday through much of the year, with September and October the wettest months and December to April the dry season. Pavones' best swell season, roughly April to October, overlaps with the wetter half of the year — surfers should plan morning flights and accept green-season conditions.
