Liberia — Costa Rica
For a certain kind of Costa Rica trip, Liberia is the correct answer and San José is a mistake. If your itinerary is built around the Guanacaste coast — Papagayo, Tamarindo, Nosara, Sámara, the Rincón de la Vieja volcano — then arriving at LIR removes a four-hour drive from the front of your holiday and another from the back.
Daniel Oduber Quirós International, universally known as Liberia or Guanacaste Airport, sits in the dry northwest, 82 metres above sea level in a landscape that looks nothing like the rainforest most visitors expect. This is tropical dry forest: guanacaste trees, savanna, brown hills for half the year and a startling green for the other half. It is Costa Rica's second international gateway and, for the resort corridor, its most useful one.
LIR operates runway 07/25, 2,750 metres by 45 metres of asphalt, at 82 metres (269 ft) elevation. It is open 24 hours, is a full port of entry, and is operated under concession by Coriport. ICAO: MRLB. Coordinates: 10°35′42″N, 85°32′40″W.
The runway handles widebody international traffic. In 2024 the airport processed 1,921,345 passengers, up 16.1% year on year, across 27,643 aircraft movements — growth that reflects how quickly the Guanacaste coast has consolidated as an independent destination rather than an add-on to a San José itinerary.
The low elevation is operationally significant in the opposite direction from SJO: aircraft perform well here, and the combination of a long runway at near sea level makes LIR an easy field in almost all conditions.

The most valuable of these are the ones that cross the Nicoya peninsula's interior. Anything that would otherwise require driving inland and back out again is a candidate for a twenty-minute flight.
LIR is also the logical entry point for a combined Guanacaste–Arenal itinerary: fly in to Liberia, spend the first half of the trip on the coast, then charter across to La Fortuna in about thirty-five minutes rather than driving around Lake Arenal.

Things to do near Liberia
Liberia town is 12 kilometres from the terminal, but nobody comes for Liberia. The airport's value is its position relative to the coast. Playas del Coco and the Papagayo peninsula are 25 to 40 minutes away. Tamarindo is about 70 minutes by road. Rincón de la Vieja National Park, with its fumaroles and mud pots, is roughly an hour northeast. The Nicaraguan border is 80 kilometres north.
Where the road network stops being useful is further south. Nosara is a three-hour drive from LIR despite being barely 100 kilometres away, because the route runs inland and back out again on roads that deteriorate in the wet season. Sámara and Punta Islita are similar. This is precisely the gap that a charter closes: LIR to Nosara is about 25 minutes in the air.
Rincón de la Vieja National Park is the headline: an active volcanic complex with boiling mud, hot springs, waterfalls and a network of trails, about an hour from the terminal. Palo Verde National Park, on the Tempisque river, is one of the finest birdwatching wetlands in Central America. Llanos de Cortés waterfall is a twenty-minute detour off the highway south. The Papagayo peninsula holds the country's densest concentration of luxury resorts. And the beaches — Conchal, Flamingo, Grande, Avellanas, Tamarindo — run continuously down the coast within ninety minutes.

When to fly
Guanacaste has the most pronounced seasonality in Costa Rica. From roughly December to April, it barely rains at all — reliable sun, strong offshore winds in the mornings, dust, and a landscape that turns brown and sculptural. From May to November the rains arrive, usually as sharp afternoon storms rather than all-day drizzle, and the region turns emerald. September and October are the wettest.
For flight planning, the dry season is close to ideal: consistent visibility, few weather delays, and coastal strips that stay firm. In the green season, morning departures matter for the same reasons they do everywhere else in the country.
