Tegucigalpa — Honduras

Toncontín has a reputation, and it is earned. The airport sits in a valley at 629 metres, ringed by terrain that pushes the minimum safe altitude to 9,900 feet, with a runway of 2,021 metres and no room in any direction to make it longer. For years it was the standard example of a genuinely demanding commercial approach, and pilots flying into Tegucigalpa were type-specific and route-qualified.

Since Palmerola opened in October 2021, Toncontín has stepped back from that role. It now handles principally domestic traffic and remains the airport physically inside the capital — which, for anyone whose business is in Tegucigalpa rather than in transit, is still the relevant consideration.

Runway 02/20, 2,021 metres (6,631 ft), asphalt, at 629 metres (2,064 ft) elevation. ICAO: MHTG. Coordinates: 14°03′39″N, 87°13′02″W.

Approach and departure profile:

None of this makes Toncontín unusable — it is flown daily — but it does mean it is not a field for a crew without the specific approach authorisation, and it is not a field where marginal weather is worth pressing. For charter operations into the Honduran capital, Palmerola is the default and Toncontín the considered exception, chosen when proximity to central Tegucigalpa outweighs everything else.

The high elevation compounds the runway length: at 629 metres on a warm afternoon, 2,021 metres is less runway than the number suggests.

Things to do near Tegucigalpa

The capital sprawls up the sides of its valley, which is the first thing you notice and the reason the airport is where it is. It is not a conventional tourist city, and it is honest to say so — but it has more than its reputation allows.

The Basílica de Suyapa holds the Virgin of Suyapa, patroness of Honduras, a wooden figure a few centimetres tall that draws pilgrims from across Central America each February. The colonial centre around the Parque Central and the Iglesia Los Dolores is compact and worth an hour. The Museo para la Identidad Nacional is the best introduction to Honduran history in the country.

La Tigra National Park, 20 minutes from the city, was the first national park declared in Honduras. It protects cloud forest that once served as the watershed for the El Rosario silver mines, and the ruins of the mining company town sit inside it. Quetzals are present.

Valle de Ángeles and Santa Lucía, 30 to 45 minutes out in the pine hills, are restored colonial mining villages — cooler, quieter, and the standard Tegucigalpa weekend.

The name Tegucigalpa is generally read as coming from Nahuatl and rendered as "silver hills", for the mines that founded the city in the sixteenth century. Across the Choluteca river lies Comayagüela, formally part of the same municipality and in practice a separate city — denser, older in feel, and home to the largest markets in the country.

When to fly

When to fly

Tegucigalpa's elevation gives it a pleasant climate by Central American standards — warm days, cool nights, and considerably less humidity than the coast. The dry season runs roughly November to April; the wet season May to October, with afternoon convection that, given the terrain, matters more here than at a coastal field.

Morning operations are strongly preferred. Afternoon cloud in the surrounding mountains is the routine constraint.

FAQ

Toncontín International Airport — Frequently asked questions

What is the runway length at Toncontín (TGU)?

2,021 metres (6,631 ft), runway 02/20, at 629 m elevation. ICAO: MHTG.

Why is Toncontín considered a difficult airport?

It sits in a mountain valley with a minimum safe altitude of 9,900 feet, a short runway at significant elevation, and terrain that constrains both the approach and the departure options.

Is Toncontín still Tegucigalpa's international airport?

Not principally. Palmerola (XPL) took that role in October 2021. Toncontín now handles mainly domestic traffic but remains the airport physically inside the capital.

Should I fly into TGU or XPL?

Palmerola is the default for most itineraries. Toncontín makes sense when proximity to central Tegucigalpa is the deciding factor and the operator holds the required approach authorisation.

What is La Tigra?

The first national park declared in Honduras, 20 minutes from Tegucigalpa, protecting cloud forest and the ruins of the El Rosario mining town.

When is the Suyapa pilgrimage?

Early February, at the Basílica de Suyapa, drawing pilgrims from across Central America.
