Panama Itinerary 7 Days: From Cosmopolitan City to Virgin Caribbean Islands

The perfect 7-day Panama luxury itinerary. Panama City, the Canal, San Blas Islands, and Bocas del Toro. Crafted for discerning travelers who want the very best — with private transfers and exclusive experiences.

Seven Days in Panama: A Journey Between Two Worlds

Panama has a remarkable quality that few destinations can match: in seven days, you can experience a world-class cosmopolitan city, an engineering marvel that changed the history of global commerce, a pristine Caribbean archipelago inhabited by indigenous people who have resisted modernity for generations, and a tropical beach destination with some of the finest marine biodiversity in the Americas. Not as a rushed checklist — but as a properly paced, deeply felt journey.

This itinerary has been tested and refined by our travel specialists. It is the route we would take ourselves.

Day 1 & 2 — Panama City: The City That Connects the World

Arrival & First Impressions

Land at Tocumen International Airport (PTY) and proceed to your hotel. We recommend Casco Viejo as your base — staying in the historic quarter puts you at the center of the most interesting neighborhood in Central America. The American Trade Hotel (a Robert De Niro-produced boutique property with a rooftop pool and jazz bar) or the Casa Sucre Boutique Hotel are our preferred choices.

Your first evening: walk Casco Viejo at dusk. The light at this hour on the colonial facades is extraordinary. Dinner at Fonda Lo Que Hay — creative Panamanian cuisine in a beautifully converted colonial building. Order the ceviche, the ropa vieja with yuca, and the chicheme panna cotta for dessert.

Day 2: The Canal and the City

Morning: arrange a private partial transit of the Panama Canal. This is not the Miraflores visitor center experience — this is stepping aboard a motor launch and watching the locks operate from the water, as vessels ten times your length share the chamber with you. The scale is genuinely humbling.

Afternoon: visit the Biomuseo, Frank Gehry’s only building in Latin America, which tells the story of how the isthmus of Panama literally changed the world’s biology. Then: rooftop cocktails at the Tantalo Hotel with the Panama City skyline reflected in your glass.

Day 3 — San Blas: The Caribbean at Its Most Pure

The Transfer

Early morning transfer to Albrook Airport (20 minutes from Casco Viejo). Board your private charter plane — a 9-seat Cessna Caravan or similar. Thirty-five minutes later, you land on a grass airstrip on a San Blas island. Your catamaran is anchored 200 meters offshore. Your captain wades to shore to greet you.

The First Day Afloat

The rest of this day belongs to the water. Snorkel at Perro Island over the sunken tugboat. Swim in water so clear it seems fake. Eat grilled lobster and fresh ceviche on the deck as the sun sets over the Caribbean. Fall asleep to the sound of the trade wind in the rigging.

Day 4 — San Blas: Islands, Culture, and Stars

Your second full day in San Blas reveals more of the archipelago. Morning: visit a Guna community — observe the women crafting molas, learn about the Guna cosmology from your culturally knowledgeable guide, purchase a genuine mola directly from its maker. Afternoon: snorkel the coral gardens of Chichimé Cays. Sundowners on Naranjo Chico, a two-palm island so small it barely exists. Dinner aboard: your chef prepares a three-course meal with whatever the Guna fishermen brought to the boat that morning.

Day 5 — Bocas del Toro: Caribbean with an Edge

The Connection

Morning flight from San Blas back to Albrook Airport, then immediate connection to Bocas del Toro (BOC). Flight time: 35 minutes. Total travel from San Blas to your Bocas hotel: approximately 3 hours door to door. (The overland/sea alternative takes 12–14 hours. We do not discuss the overland/sea alternative.)

Bocas Town and Beyond

Check into your resort on the archipelago. We recommend Playa Tortuga Hotel & Beach Club or Tranquilo Bay Eco Adventure Lodge for a more immersive nature experience. Afternoon: explore Bocas Town — the colorful Caribbean clapboard architecture of Isla Colón’s main village, the cold Balboa beer at the waterfront, the reggae drifting from open-air bars. This is the Caribbean as it was before Instagram.

Day 6 — Bocas del Toro: Marine Life and Secret Beaches

Hire a private boat for the day. First stop: Dolphin Bay, where a permanent resident pod of bottlenose dolphins feeds in the shallow lagoon — approach quietly and they will swim directly under your boat. Second stop: Starfish Beach on Isla Bastimentos — wade in the shallows among orange and red starfish. Third stop: Red Frog Beach — one of the most beautiful beaches in the Americas, named for the tiny poison dart frogs (Oophaga pumilio) that live in the jungle behind the sand. Lunch at the beach bar. Return to your hotel for sunset cocktails.

Day 7 — Return: One Last Morning in Panama City

Fly back from Bocas del Toro to Panama City. If your international flight departs in the afternoon or evening, use the morning for the Casco Viejo market and one final Panamanian coffee. We recommend stopping at Café Unido in the Old Quarter — Panama grows extraordinary single-origin coffee that most of the country exports rather than drinks. This is one place that does it right.

✦ Upgrade Option: Panama → Cartagena or Medellín

If your schedule allows, Panama City is 55 minutes by private jet from Cartagena, Colombia, and 70 minutes from Medellín — two of South America’s most exciting cities. We can arrange seamless same-day connections for travelers who want to extend their journey.
