This is a genuine decision, not a sales question, and the honest answer depends on how long you are staying. A rented 4x4 is freedom for a week and a punishment for a weekend. Nicoya's geography is why: the distances look small and the roads make them large.
What the peninsula actually demands of a car
Mixed surfaces. Paved sections give way to gravel and, in the rainy season, to rutted stretches that change week to week.
River crossings on some routes. Not every access needs one, but the ones that do are not negotiable in a small car.
And time. From San José the drive is most of a day once the ferry or the long way around is included. By air, Tambor is 50.2 nautical miles, Nosara 85.6 and Liberia 86.9.
When the rental wins
Stays of a week or more. Once you are there, the car pays for itself in the freedom to reach beaches, trailheads and restaurants that no transfer will take you to twice a day.
Families with a flexible schedule, where the drive can be part of the trip rather than an obstacle.
And budget-first travel, where the days spent driving matter less than the money saved.
When the flight wins
Short stays. Three or four nights cannot absorb two long travel days.
Late arrivals. An international flight landing in the afternoon turns into a night drive, which we advise against everywhere in this region.
Groups of four or more, where the cost per person and the two vans' worth of driving both change the arithmetic.
And surf or dive trips with equipment, where a small rental car was never going to fit the boards anyway.
The option most people miss: do both
Fly in, rent locally. Take the aircraft for the long leg and pick up a car at destination for the week.
It removes the worst part of the trip — the mountain and gravel drive with jet lag — and keeps the freedom once you are there.
Local rental is not always cheaper per day, and the fleet is smaller, so book it before you arrive rather than on the day. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
What people underestimate about the rental
Insurance is mandatory and quoted separately. The advertised daily rate is rarely the final one, so compare the total with insurance included.
The deposit is held on a card, often a substantial amount.
A small SUV is not a 4x4. For some accesses the difference matters, and the rental desk will not argue the point with you afterwards.
And fuel and time. A day of driving costs a tank and a day.
The routes where this comes up most
San José to Santa Teresa and Mal País, via Tambor at 50.2 nautical miles.
San José or Liberia to Nosara, 85.6 and 37.6 nautical miles respectively — the second being a short hop that saves hours of winding road.
And Liberia to the southern beaches, where the drive gets longer than the map suggests. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a 4x4 in Nicoya?
On several accesses yes, especially in the rainy season and where a river crossing is involved. A small SUV is not the same thing.
Is flying worth it for a short stay?
Usually. Three or four nights cannot absorb two long travel days, and Tambor is 50.2 nautical miles from San José.
What if I want a car once I am there?
Fly the long leg and rent locally. Book the local car before arriving, as the fleet is small.
Should I drive at night?
No. We advise against night driving across this region, and Nicoya's roads are a clear example of why.
Is the rental cheaper?
Compare the total with mandatory insurance, the deposit and the days spent driving, not the advertised daily rate.
What about surfboards?
They rarely fit a small rental car, and on the aircraft they are a volume question to declare in advance.
