This page does not give you a figure: it explains what yours depends on. And at this particular destination, what moves it most is not the distance. On request per aircraft.
The airport is not in San Juan del Sur
The basics first, because almost nobody has this clear when asking for a quote.
San Juan del Sur has no airstrip. The field serving it is Costa Esmeralda (ECI), on the Nicaraguan Pacific coast, and from the airport to town there is a ground transfer.
We do not operate that leg and it is not in the fare. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
If you compare our price against a destination where you land and you are there — Quepos, Tamarindo — you are comparing different things. We say so here, before the price rather than in the small print.
The origin weighs more than the destination
Here is the factor that moves the bill most, and it is not intuitive.
| Origin | Distance | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Managua (MGA) | 43.6 NM | Nicaraguan domestic |
| Liberia (LIR), Costa Rica | 57.8 NM | International |
| San José (SJO), Costa Rica | 138.0 NM | International |
Liberia is only fourteen nautical miles further than Managua. But one is domestic and the other crosses a border, with exit and entry formalities at both ends and more lead time required. Departure and entry formalities vary by country and need lead time; we coordinate them with every passenger’s details.
And from San José the distance triples against Managua.
The practical conclusion: if your trip already passes through Nicaragua, the flight is organised differently — and on a different cost structure — than if you enter from Costa Rica.

The four components of your quote
The flight. Quoted per whole aircraft, not per passenger. Whether two travel or eight, the flight price is the same.
Border formalities, if you come from Costa Rica. They have their own deadlines and their own cost, and they do not depend on us.
The ground transfer from the airport to San Juan del Sur. Not our service.
The assigned aircraft, which depends on your group and your baggage. With surfboards — and a good share of the traffic here is boards — the arithmetic changes. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
When flying does not earn its place
Let us be clear, because this destination has a real overland alternative.
From Liberia, the road to the Peñas Blancas border and on to San Juan del Sur is a well-known run and considerably cheaper. It is a day, with a land border crossing whose timings nobody controls, but it works.
Flying earns its place when the trip is short, when the group splits the cost, or when your baggage makes the overland transfer painful.
It does not for a single transfer, as a couple, with time to spare. We say so here so you trust us when we say the opposite elsewhere.
What genuinely pushes the price up
Two things, and neither is distance.
Lead time. At an international destination with a marked season, booking late narrows the options before price even enters the picture.
Baggage. It is the factor that most often forces a step up in aircraft category without the client expecting it. Say how many boards you are carrying in the first message.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an airport at San Juan del Sur?
No. The field serving the destination is Costa Esmeralda (ECI), and from the airport to town there is a ground transfer we do not operate.
Which origin works out best?
Managua is 43.6 nautical miles and domestic. Liberia is 57.7 and San José 137.8, both international with formalities at either end.
Why does Liberia cost differently from Managua at almost the same distance?
Fourteen nautical miles separate them, but one is domestic and the other crosses a border, with its own deadlines and formalities. Departure and entry formalities vary by country and need lead time; we coordinate them with every passenger’s details.
Is the transfer to town included?
No. It is not our service and it is not in the fare. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
Is it worth it against the road?
From Liberia the overland route via Peñas Blancas is considerably cheaper and it works. Flying earns its place on a short trip, in a group, or with bulky baggage.
What pushes the quote up most?
Lead time and baggage. Surfboards are the factor that most often forces a step up in aircraft category without the client expecting it.
