Tortuguero is a roadless origin, and that changes how a departure from here is planned. Before the destinations, the warning this page needs and no other Caribbean page does.
First: the river sets the hour
From the lodge to the airfield you travel by river, with a last departure of the day. Access to the lodges is by river and has a last departure of the day that sets your flight time.
We do not operate it, and it cannot be brought forward: it depends on the lodge and the canal. That means your flight's hour is fixed after the river's, not before.
Say it when you request the quote. It is the detail that most often forces a booking to be redone — and the lodges know their own last departure without needing to be pressed.
The destinations, by distance
| Destination | Distance |
|---|---|
| Barra del Colorado | 12.7 NM |
| Guápiles | 26.9 NM |
| Limón | 46.8 NM |
| Tobías Bolaños (Pavas) | 52.1 NM |
| San José | 53.4 NM |
| La Fortuna | 63.1 NM |
Six destinations, none beyond sixty-five nautical miles. Tortuguero is closer to everything than its isolation suggests.
What isolates it is not distance but the absence of a road: by land and water, any of these is a full day.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Barra del Colorado, twelve nautical miles away
It is the neighbour, and they are two different trips: here the canals and the turtles, there the refuge and tarpon and snook fishing.
Twelve point seven nautical miles. If you combine both, ask for the two legs together: it prices better than two separate flights from the Central Valley. And it is the logical order — Tortuguero first, Barra after, direct return.
Guápiles and Limón: the two exits with a road
Guápiles (26.9 NM) is the nearest mainland field and the point the usual overland access runs through.
Limón (46.8 NM) is the gateway to the southern Caribbean — Cahuita, Puerto Viejo — and the only point on this seaboard with a road.
If you are coming down from the canals to the south, the direct flight to Limón avoids the inland detour the geography forces: by land you must move away from the coast to return to it further south.
For the Central Valley, San José is 53.4 nautical miles away and Pavas 52.1 — much the same, so the choice of arrival field comes down to where you are going next.
And La Fortuna, to close the north
Sixty-three point one nautical miles to the Arenal. It is the link joining the Caribbean to the volcanic north without passing through San José.
With the usual caveat: the Arenal's weather window is set by the volcano, not the client. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field. Ask early in the morning and allow margin in the date.
