The borders closer than the capital

Three international departures under sixty nautical miles, and why the flight buys predictability rather than distance.

There are three points in Costa Rica from which leaving the country is shorter than reaching the capital. All three are at the extremes, and all three share the same logic.

The three departures

From To Distance To San José
Golfito David (Panama) 47.1 NM 100.7 NM
Puerto Jiménez David (Panama) 52.2 NM 102.6 NM
Limón Bocas del Toro (Panama) 58.8 NM 70.0 NM

Golfito to David is the shortest international crossing in the whole catalogue. And from Puerto Jiménez, Panama is literally twice as close as San José.

For comparison: from the Central Valley, David is 142.4 nautical miles away and Bocas del Toro 122.1. Leaving from the extremes saves more than half.

What the flight buys, and it is not distance

By road, the land crossing between Costa Rica and Panama on the Pacific side is Paso Canoas: one of the most congested crossings in Central America.

Waits run from twenty minutes to several hours with no predictable pattern. It is also the main freight crossing between the two countries, and lorry volume cannot be anticipated.

The flight does not buy distance: it buys avoiding a queue of unknown length.

And this has to be said in full: the international flight has deadlines of its own. Departure and entry formalities vary by country and need lead time; we coordinate them with every passenger’s details. The difference is that those are known in advance and the Paso Canoas queue is not.

It is the same criterion the catalogue applies to the Braulio Carrillo pass and the Cerro de la Muerte: what you pay for is not the average time, it is the removal of the tail.

The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

Which to use, and when

Golfito is the large field on the gulf: fourteen hundred metres by twenty, with no aircraft restriction. With a large group, that is the departure.

Puerto Jiménez restricts — eight hundred and twenty-two metres by eighteen — and is five nautical miles further from David. It is worth staging through Golfito, which is also international: ten extra nautical miles in exchange for not splitting the group or handling a border from a small field. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

Limón opens the Panamanian Caribbean. Eighteen hundred metres, international status, no restriction at all.

What to plan for

Margin in the date. At Golfito two conditions of different kinds meet on the same day: the border's deadlines, handled in advance, and the narrow valley with high ground on both sides, checked that morning. The surrounding terrain shapes the approach and, with it, which aircraft can work the field.

And lead time. An international leg is quoted separately and with more margin than a domestic one. Say so from the start if your itinerary heads down into Panama. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

Who it suits

Anyone combining Osa with Chiriquí or Boquete — two adjacent mountain regions separated by a slow land border.

Anyone heading down the Caribbean towards Bocas del Toro, where Limón is the last large point before the border and the last with no aircraft restriction.

And anyone closing a circuit through the Costa Rican south: from Golfito, leaving for Panama is shorter than returning to San José.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the shortest crossing?

Golfito to David, 47.1 nautical miles. No other border in the catalogue is crossed in less.

What do I gain over Paso Canoas?

Avoiding a queue of unknown length. The flight buys predictability, not distance.

Does the flight have no formalities?

It does, with deadlines of its own. The difference is that they are known in advance. Departure and entry formalities vary by country and need lead time; we coordinate them with every passenger’s details.

Golfito or Puerto Jiménez?

Golfito: it is international, does not restrict the aircraft and is closer to David. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

And by the Caribbean?

Limón to Bocas del Toro, 58.8 nautical miles — closer than San José at 70.0.

How much lead time?

More than a domestic leg. It is quoted separately and worth saying from the start.
