A Seven-Day Itinerary for Guatemala

Three headline places and a country that takes hours to cross. The route that fits, the one that doesn't, and the leg that decides whether Tikal happens.

Guatemala's three headline places — Antigua, Atitlán and Tikal — fit into a week, and they only fit one way. The country is small and slow, and the order matters more here than in most destinations.

The route that works

Day one: arrive, transfer to Antigua. Roughly an hour from the capital. Do nothing else; the flight and the road are the day.

Days two and three: Antigua. The town itself, a volcano or a coffee farm, and the evening altitude you were not expecting.

Day four: Lake Atitlán. Two and a half to three hours by road, then a boat to your village. Arrive in time to cross before the afternoon wind.

Day five: the lake. One full day, which is the minimum that justifies the road leg.

Day six: Tikal. Fly the Petén — Flores is 145,1 nautical miles from Guatemala City — and you have a full afternoon and the following morning at the ruins. Drive it and you have lost the day.

Day seven: Tikal early, then home.

That is the week. It is not relaxed, and every element earns its place.

The variation for people who prefer depth

Drop the lake. Four nights in Antigua with day trips, then three in the Petén.

Or drop Tikal. Antigua and Atitlán with time to spare, saving the Petén for a trip that can give it two days rather than one and a half.

Both are better holidays than the full circuit and worse introductions to the country. Know which you are buying.

The route that does not work

Adding Semuc Champey. It is beautiful and it is eight to ten hours of rough road from almost anywhere in this itinerary. On a week it consumes two days and delivers one.

And driving to the Petén. Eight hours or more each way, which on a seven-day trip means the Tikal leg costs three days of the seven.

Chichicastenango on the wrong day. The market runs Thursdays and Sundays; arriving on a Tuesday gets you a quiet town and a wasted detour.

Where the flight decides the trip

The Petén sector is the whole argument on a one-week Guatemala itinerary. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

Without it, Tikal costs three days of a seven-day trip and most people drop it. With it, Tikal costs a day and a half.

And the arrival day. A late landing in Guatemala City means the Antigua transfer happens in afternoon traffic and then darkness; a morning landing does not. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

The two-country version

Flores to Belize City is 96,9 nautical miles, which makes a week that ends on the cayes genuinely realistic. San Pedro Sula is 159,8 from the capital for a Copán leg.

Both are international sectors with formalities at each end, planned rather than assumed.

What the season does

We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. November to April, the route above runs as written.

May to October, build slack into the road legs and treat the Petén flight as the insurance it is — a landslide on a mountain road is the thing most likely to cost you a day.

Frequently asked questions

Is a week enough for Guatemala?

Yes, for Antigua, Atitlán and Tikal, in that order. It is not relaxed, and every element earns its place.

What is the right order?

Antigua first, then the lake, then the Petén. The transfers only work in that sequence.

Can I fit Semuc Champey?

Not in a week. It is eight to ten hours of rough road from anywhere on this route, consuming two days to deliver one.

Do I have to fly to Tikal?

Not have to. But driving costs three of your seven days, and most people who drive it end up dropping Tikal instead.

When is the Chichicastenango market?

Thursdays and Sundays. Arriving on another day gets you a quiet town and a wasted detour.

Can I add Belize or Copán?

Yes. Belize City is 96,9 nautical miles from Flores and San Pedro Sula 159,8 from the capital — international sectors, planned in advance.
