Do You Need Travel Insurance for Honduras?

Not whether you need cover, but what to check. The exclusions that bite on a dive trip, and the one clause to confirm before a stay on a small island.

This is not insurance advice and we do not sell insurance. Read your policy and ask your insurer the specific questions below — what follows is the set worth asking for this country, because the usual exclusions bite differently here. AeroRide sells flights, not insurance: confirm cover with your insurer.

Why it matters more than it looks

This is a diving destination, and diving sits on more exclusion lists than any other holiday activity.

And the islands are small. Roatán has medical facilities and a hyperbaric chamber; Utila has a chamber too; Guanaja at 36,3 nautical miles has far less, and serious care means reaching the mainland — Roatán at 39,4 nautical miles from La Ceiba, or San Pedro Sula at 96,1.

That combination — a high-participation risk activity on islands with limited facilities — is exactly the profile insurers write exclusions for.

The clauses to read

Diving cover, by name. Not "adventure sports covered" but diving specifically, with the depth limit and the certification requirement stated.

Depth and certification. Policies commonly cover recreational diving to a named depth and only with a certified diver, and some exclude diving without a buddy or outside an organised dive.

Decompression illness and chamber treatment, which is a separate question from general medical cover and the one that matters most on a dive trip.

Medical evacuation, which is not the same as treatment cover. Ask explicitly whether evacuation from a small island is included and what triggers it.

Small boat and ferry travel, which some policies treat differently from scheduled transport. Relevant here because so much movement happens by boat. We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost.

And weather disruption, for the windy months when a crossing may cost you a night.

What people wrongly assume

That a diving certification agency's included cover is enough. Some agencies include accident cover as a membership benefit, and it is usually narrower than a travel policy and not a substitute for one.

That credit card cover suffices. Sometimes it does. It usually has lower limits, shorter maximum trip lengths and more exclusions than people expect.

And that "worldwide" includes remote areas. Read the definition, which occasionally excludes places beyond a stated distance from a medical facility — a clause written for exactly the islands you are going to.

The one to confirm before a small-island stay

Evacuation from a place without a hospital.

If your itinerary includes Guanaja or a small lodge reached only by boat, that is the clause to get confirmed in writing before you travel. It is the difference between an expensive problem and an unmanageable one.

What advisories do to a policy

Some policies restrict or void cover for travel against a government advisory, and Honduras has region-specific advisories that differ sharply between the islands and parts of the mainland.

Read what your policy says about advisories, because this is the country in this region where that clause is most likely to be relevant. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

What we can and cannot tell you

We can tell you which of your destinations are remote, which strips are daylight-only, and what an unscheduled movement means operationally. That helps you ask your insurer a precise question. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

We cannot tell you whether you are covered, and any travel company that tells you your policy covers something is telling you something it does not know.

Frequently asked questions

Is this insurance advice?

No. We do not sell insurance. This lists the questions to ask your own insurer about this country.

Why does it matter more in Honduras?

It is a diving destination, and diving sits on more exclusion lists than any other holiday activity — on islands with limited facilities.

What should I check about diving cover?

Diving by name, the depth limit, the certification requirement, and whether decompression illness and chamber treatment are covered.

Is my dive agency's cover enough?

Usually not. Agency accident cover is generally narrower than a travel policy and not a substitute for one.

What is the one clause to confirm?

Evacuation from a place without a hospital, in writing, if your trip includes Guanaja or a boat-only lodge.

Do travel advisories affect my policy?

They can. Honduras has region-specific advisories, so read what your policy says about travelling against one.
