Nicaragua for Remote Work

The lowest cost of living on the isthmus and a surf coast to work beside. What holds up, what the advisories mean for a long stay, and who should look elsewhere.

Nicaragua offers the lowest cost of living on the isthmus and a surf coast to sit beside, and it is the country in this region where we would tell you most plainly to check whether it suits your situation before committing to a month.

The two structural advantages

The cost. Rent, food and services are meaningfully cheaper than Costa Rica or Panama, and the gap is largest on exactly the things a long stay spends on.

And the time zone. Nicaragua runs on Central Time year-round with no seasonal change, which gives a stable overlap with North America every month.

The honest caveat

Travel advisories affect long stays more than short ones.

A two-week holiday against an advisory is one insurance conversation; a three-month stay is a different exposure, and some policies will not cover it at all.

Check your policy, your own government's advice, and any employer policy before you book a month, not after. Some remote-work employers restrict where staff may work from, and that is a document question worth settling early. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change. We do not advise on visas; we do tell you the formalities at each end of the flight.

We take no political position. We flag this because it is the difference between a good month and an expensive problem.

Where people base

Granada is the practical choice: walkable, with cafés, a small coworking scene, decent fibre in many rentals, and enough of an international population that a month is not isolating.

San Juan del Sur for the coast and the surf, with a transient crowd and more variable connectivity.

The Tola bays are beautiful and thin on infrastructure — good for a week, harder for a month.

León for a cheaper, hotter, more local version of Granada.

And not the Corn Islands, where connectivity and power make sustained work genuinely difficult.

Where the connection stops holding

Granada is the most reliable, with fibre in many centre rentals.

San Juan del Sur varies by property and by time of day.

Ask for a speed test rather than a description, ask specifically about upload, and ask what happens in a power cut — the power is the weaker link here, not the bandwidth, and the rentals that work are the ones with a plan for it.

The heat, which is the daily adjustment

This is hot lowland every month, and working through a March afternoon without air conditioning is not realistic.

Check that your rental has cooling in the room you will actually work in, not just the bedroom. That is the single most useful question to ask a landlord here.

The visa question

Nicaragua belongs to the CA-4, so a border run to Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador does not reset your clock.

Costa Rica is outside it, which is why the Costa Rica run is the one that works — and Liberia is 57,8 nautical miles from Costa Esmeralda, which makes it a short hop rather than a border day.

Longer-stay routes exist with conditions set by immigration, and they change. Check the current position with Nicaraguan immigration or a migration lawyer, not a travel article, this one included.

The pattern that works

A Granada base with trips out, rather than constant movement.

For weekends, the network is Managua, Costa Esmeralda at 43,6 nautical miles and Corn Island at 182,4. Everything else on the Pacific side is a short road, which is genuinely convenient. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking. We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost.

Frequently asked questions

Why Nicaragua for remote work?

The lowest cost of living on the isthmus and Central Time year-round with no seasonal change.

What is the catch?

Advisories affect long stays more than short ones. Check your policy, your government's advice and any employer restriction before booking a month.

Where should I base?

Granada for practicality, San Juan del Sur for the coast, León for a cheaper local version. Not the Corn Islands.

Is the internet reliable?

Granada is the most reliable. Ask for a speed test and ask what happens in a power cut — the power is the weaker link, not the bandwidth.

What should I ask a landlord?

Whether there is cooling in the room you will actually work in. Working through a March afternoon without it is not realistic.

Does a border run reset my stay?

Not to Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador — the CA-4 shares the clock. Costa Rica is outside it, and Liberia is 57,8 nautical miles away.
