Nicaragua has two coasts on different calendars, and an itinerary that crosses them needs more than one answer. The Pacific has a clean dry season. The Caribbean does not really have one.
We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost.
The Pacific side
Dry roughly November to April, reliably so, with strong offshore winds and blue skies. This is the high season and it earns the name.
Wet roughly May to October, with afternoon rain that arrives on a schedule and mornings that are frequently clear.
Hot all year. This is lowland — Granada, León, the coast and the lake are warm in every month, and the highland relief of Guatemala does not exist here.
March and April are the hottest, genuinely so, and León in April is the hottest city most visitors will experience in Central America.
The Caribbean side
Corn Island and Bluefields rain through most of the year, with the driest window roughly March to April and a secondary lull around September.
That is the opposite pattern from the Pacific, and it is why a two-coast trip rarely finds a month that is perfect for both. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
The trade winds blow hardest December to February, which affects boat transfers between Big and Little Corn more than it affects the flights.
The north-central highlands
Matagalpa, Jinotega and Estelí are cooler, sitting high enough that nights are pleasant and the coffee grows.
They are also wetter than the Pacific lowlands, with cloud and drizzle common outside the driest months, and the local name for that persistent highland drizzle tells you how routine it is.
For most visitors this matters as a packing question, because a trip that includes both Granada and Matagalpa needs a layer that a Pacific-only trip does not.
The wind, which decides things
The dry season is the windy season. That is counterintuitive and it matters twice.
For the Ometepe ferry, where December to February sailings are roughest and get cancelled.
And for the surf, where those same offshore winds are exactly what make the Tola coast good in those months.
The surf calendar, which runs against the tourists
The swell is biggest roughly April to October — the wet season.
So the best surfing months are the emptiest and cheapest, and the busiest months have the cleanest conditions but smaller waves. Serious surfers plan around the swell; everyone else plans around the sun.
Month by month, roughly
December to February: dry, breezy, cool nights by local standards, peak season. Rough ferry crossings.
March to April: the hottest and driest. Easter fills the beaches completely.
May to August: afternoon rain, green landscape, building swell, fewer visitors.
September to October: the wettest on the Pacific and a relative lull on the Caribbean. Cheapest months, and the ones where a tight itinerary has the least room to absorb a lost afternoon. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.
Planning around it
If you want both coasts, accept a compromise month. Roughly March gives the driest overlap, and it is also the hottest.
And build slack around the ferry in the windy months, or fly the Corn Island leg at 182,4 nautical miles where the weather affects the boats more than the aircraft.
Whatever the month, mornings are the reliable part of the day on both coasts. Rain, wind and heat all build through the afternoon, so an itinerary that front-loads the day loses less to the weather than one that does not.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Nicaragua?
November to April on the Pacific side: dry, sunny and reliable. The Caribbean runs a different calendar.
Does the Caribbean have a dry season?
Not really. It rains through most of the year, with the driest window roughly March to April and a lull around September.
Is it cold anywhere?
Only relatively, in the north-central highlands around Matagalpa and Jinotega. The Pacific lowlands are hot year-round.
When is the surf best?
Roughly April to October, the wet season. The best surfing months are the emptiest and cheapest.
Why is the dry season windy?
The trade winds blow hardest December to February. That makes the Ometepe ferry rough and the Tola surf clean at the same time.
Can I do both coasts in one month?
With a compromise. Roughly March gives the driest overlap, and it is also the hottest.
