How many days you need in Guatemala depends on one problem: its two headline destinations sit at opposite ends of the country. Antigua is in the highlands. Tikal is in the Petén lowlands, 269 km (167 mi) north. By road that is a full day. By air it is 55 minutes.
The real transfer times
| Destination | From Guatemala City by road | By air |
|---|---|---|
| Antigua | ~1 h | short drive |
| Lake Atitlán | 3 h | highland road |
| Quetzaltenango | 4 h | 25 min |
| Retalhuleu | several hours | 25 min |
| Río Dulce | 6 h combined | 40 min |
| Puerto Barrios | most of a day | 50 min |
| Flores / Tikal | full day | 55 min |
Which means: the highlands are a road circuit, and everything else is an air hop.
Five days
By road: Antigua and Atitlán, with a long day to reach Tikal or skipping it entirely.
By air: Antigua, Atitlán, Tikal and the Caribbean, with no travel days.
A five-day air itinerary: highlands for two days, Petén for two, Río Dulce for one.
Seven days
Adds the Pacific and the western highlands.
Retalhuleu, at 25 minutes, with the IRTRA parks — open Thursday to Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., last entry 4:00 p.m. — and the bocacosta coffee farms.
And Quetzaltenango, at 25 minutes, with Tajumulco at 4,220 m (13,845 ft) — the highest peak in Central America — plus Laguna Chicabal, an active Maya Mam ceremonial site where swimming is prohibited, at 50 quetzales.
One operational note: Quetzaltenango's airstrip sits at roughly 2,371 m (7,780 ft), meaning longer takeoff distances and payload limits for light aircraft. Declare weight accurately.
The Tikal sunrise problem
This is what decides your Petén days
The sunrise tour allows entry from 4:00 a.m
, with a mandatory guide and a Q100 surcharge on top of the Q150 foreign ticket.
From Flores, Tikal is 63 km (39 mi) — about 1.5 to 2 hours. So a 4:00 entry means leaving Flores around 2:30 a.m.
No commercial flight lands early enough
Either you overnight in Flores, or you depart at 4:00 by charter.
And the sunrise is not guaranteed
— morning fog in the Petén is common, and from Temple IV you can find yourself looking at a wall of white.
Which argues for a flexible date more than a fixed itinerary.
What to pair with what
Tikal with Yaxhá — around $10 entry, twin lake views, far fewer visitors, and a sunset that pairs with Tikal's sunrise with less fog dependence.
Antigua with the coffee — at 1,533 m (5,030 ft) in a valley ringed by three cones, where slower ripening concentrates sugars and develops acidity.
And Río Dulce with Livingston — Guatemala's only Garifuna town, reachable only by boat, with departures from Fronteras at 9:30 and 14:30. Miss the 14:30 return and you stay the night.
The season
The Petén has marked dry and wet seasons.
In dry, morning fog is less dense and access roads are firm.
In wet, afternoon cloud is frequent — so plan air movements for the morning.
What needs booking ahead
The Tikal sunrise tour, given the guide requirement.
The IRTRA parks, whose Thursday-to-Sunday schedule rules out three days a week.
And Finca Patrocinio, near Retalhuleu, which requires reservation.
A seven-day air itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive, Antigua Day 2 — Antigua and coffee farms Day 3 — Atitlán, by road Day 4 — Fly to Flores, 55 min. Yaxhá at sunset Day 5 — Tikal at 4:00 a.m. Day 6 — Fly to Río Dulce, 40 min. Livingston Day 7 — Fly to Guatemala City, depart
Zero travel days. By road, days 4 and 6 would be spent moving.
Before you plan
Check the IRTRA calendar if the parks are on the list — three days a week they are closed.
Confirm the sunrise surcharge includes a guide.
Declare weight for any Quetzaltenango leg.
Keep a day of flexibility if the Tikal sunrise is the objective.
And plan air movements for the morning in the wet season.
Planning how many days in Guatemala
Resolve the fixed points first — permits, caps and any hard window — since those determine your dates rather than the other way around.
Then the season, which in this region decides more than the month suggests.
And keep a day of flexibility if the objective depends on weather, light or tide.
Fly with AeroRide
La Aurora (GUA) is the base, with Tikal at 55 minutes and the Caribbean at 40 to 50.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers. Final pricing depends on route, date and aircraft assigned.

Frequently asked questions
Is a week enough for Guatemala?
By air, comfortably — highlands, Petén, Pacific and Caribbean all fit in seven days with no travel days. By road, Antigua to Tikal alone consumes a full day each way.
Can you do Antigua and Tikal in one trip?
Yes. Tikal is 55 minutes from Guatemala City by air — colonial highlands in the morning, Petén jungle by evening. By road that transfer takes a full day.
What is the best Guatemala itinerary?
Highlands for two days, Petén for two with Tikal at sunrise and Yaxhá at sunset, and Río Dulce for the Caribbean. Seven days adds the Pacific bocacosta and Quetzaltenango.
How far is Tikal from Guatemala City?
269 km, which is 55 minutes by air to Flores plus 1.5 to 2 hours by road to the site.
Is the Tikal sunrise worth it?
When it is clear, yes — Temple IV is one of the few structures above the canopy. But morning fog in the Petén is frequent and the view is not guaranteed, which argues for a flexible date.
What needs booking ahead?
