It is the decision that saves most on a Costa Rica trip, and it is made weeks before you book a transfer. Fourteen pages of this catalogue mention it in passing; this is the one that settles it.
The full table
| Destination | From San José | From Liberia |
|---|---|---|
| Quepos / Manuel Antonio | 33.4 NM | 108.5 NM |
| La Fortuna / Arenal | 36.1 NM | 57.5 NM |
| Tambor / Santa Teresa | 50.2 NM | 60.1 NM |
| Tortuguero | 53.4 NM | 119.8 NM |
| Drake Bay | 83.5 NM | 159.2 NM |
| Nosara | 85.6 NM | 37.6 NM |
| Tamarindo | 97.1 NM | 23.2 NM |
The two airports sit 86.9 nautical miles apart, and the country divides between them with unusual cleanness.
The rule, and it works nearly always
If your trip is about Guanacaste, fly into Liberia. For everything else, San José.
There is not much more to decide. Tamarindo goes from 97.1 to 23.2 nautical miles — a factor of four — and Nosara from 85.6 to 37.6. In the other direction, Quepos goes from 108.5 to 33.4 and Tortuguero from 119.8 to 53.4.
No destination in the catalogue is comfortable from both. It is a sharper division than a small country usually offers.
The three cases worth thinking about
Tambor and Santa Teresa (50.2 against 60.1). The only nearly equidistant destination. Here the rest of the itinerary decides, not the distance.
Arenal (36.1 against 57.5). San José wins, but the road works from both. If your trip combines volcano and Guanacaste, fly into Liberia and drive to Arenal.
Itineraries that cross the country. If you are running from Guanacaste to Osa, the entry matters less than the order you visit things in. Fly into where you start and out of where you finish, if your ticket allows it.
What Liberia solves without any flying
This is what most people overlook.
Papagayo is twenty minutes by car from Liberia. Tamarindo, a little more. Entering there, much of Guanacaste is a short ground transfer on a main highway. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
In other words: flying into Liberia does not just shorten the domestic flight, in many cases it removes it. That is why this guide comes before any quote.
And what San José solves
Quepos is 33.4 nautical miles away and Arenal 36.1. They are the two closest destinations to any international airport in the country.
San José also has two fields: Juan Santamaría, the international, and Tobías Bolaños, the general-aviation one, 4.4 nautical miles away. For anyone connecting from long-haul that offers flexibility Liberia does not.
A note on Tamarindo
If Tamarindo is your destination, fly into Liberia — but know that the Tamarindo field closes often in the rainy season. The field operates in daylight and visual conditions, and the rainy season narrows the usable hours.
It matters little, precisely because from Liberia you drive. It matters if you were planning to fly the last twenty-three kilometres: do not.
The question that settles ninety per cent
Where will you sleep most nights?
If the answer is in Guanacaste, Liberia. If it is anywhere else, San José. And if it is split, look at the table and count nights, not destinations.
