The northern triangle of Costa Rica

Three points, none more than sixty nautical miles apart, and the only circuit in the country that closes without touching the Central Valley or the coast.

Northern Costa Rica is travelled as a triangle, not a line. And it is the only circuit in the country that closes without touching either the Central Valley or the coast.

The three sides

Leg Distance
Liberia – Upala 35.9 NM
La Fortuna – Upala 36.2 NM
La Fortuna – Liberia 57.5 NM

None exceeds sixty nautical miles. It is the most compact circuit in the Costa Rican catalogue.

And Upala is almost equidistant from Liberia and La Fortuna — thirty-six nautical miles from each — an uncommon symmetry: most fields sit clearly closer to one hub than another.

The three landscapes

The Arenal: volcano, lake, hot springs and waterfalls.

Guanacaste: tropical dry forest, seasonal and open, six months without rain.

Upala: humid lowland, the Río Frío, Caño Negro and the northern wetlands. We confirm the final access to the destination in the quote, because it changes with the date and the operation.

They are half an hour of flying apart and they are three different climates. The Guanacaste cordillera separates them, and that barrier is exactly what lengthens the overland run.

The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

The seasonal fact that runs against the grain

Almost all Costa Rican tourism follows the coast's calendar: dry is high season, wet is low.

In the northern wetlands, the best viewing period is the dry season, when the water withdraws and the birds concentrate.

That shifts demand for this circuit into the months when the coast is already full — and makes it a real alternative for anyone wanting nature in high season without competing for beach accommodation.

An itinerary that does not end at the beach

That is what makes this circuit unusual. Almost every Costa Rica itinerary ends on the coast; this one never touches the sea.

It serves a specific profile: birding, freshwater fishing, thermal springs, agritourism. And also anyone who already knows the beaches and wants something else.

Both Nicoya and Upala are among the lowest-traffic fields on the list, precisely because neither has a beach.

What conditions it

Only one end, and it is the Arenal. The weather window is set by the volcano, not the client. Cloud around the volcano sets the field’s operating window, and it is usually more favourable early in the day.

Ask early in the morning, when it is usually open, and say so at booking rather than the night before.

Upala, by contrast, is obstacle-free lowland: the limitation is declared length, nothing else. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field. With bulky observation gear — tripods, long lenses — there is no need to step up a category because of the surroundings.

And Liberia is international, with no restriction: with a large group, it is the point to enter or leave the circuit through. San José is 86.9 nautical miles away, so entering by Liberia also saves a leg.

And the fourth point, if there is time

Nicoya is 51.8 nautical miles from Upala — the long side, because the peninsula lies across the gulf. By road it is a good four hours round through Guanacaste, with no shortcut: the Amistad bridge shortens the exit towards Puntarenas, not northwards.

It is the triangle's natural extension southwards, joining two interiors with no beach at either end.

Frequently asked questions

What are the three sides?

Liberia – Upala 35.9 nautical miles, La Fortuna – Upala 36.2 and La Fortuna – Liberia 57.5.

Why a triangle rather than a line?

Because Upala is almost equidistant from Liberia and La Fortuna, which lets the circuit close.

When is the best season?

The dry season, when the water withdraws in the wetlands and the birds concentrate.

What conditions the circuit?

Only the Arenal: the weather window is set by the volcano. Cloud around the volcano sets the field’s operating window, and it is usually more favourable early in the day.

Do I have to return to the Central Valley?

No. It is the only circuit in the country that closes without touching the Central Valley or the coast.

Can it be extended?

Nicoya is 51.8 nautical miles from Upala, the triangle's long side.
