Things to do in Manuel Antonio

A small park with an outsized reputation, a town built around it, and the honest version of what that means for your visit.

Manuel Antonio is the most visited national park in Costa Rica and the smallest of the famous ones. Both facts matter, and the guides that mention the first without the second set visitors up for the wrong expectations.

What makes it worth it

Wildlife with almost no effort. Sloths, capuchins, howlers, agoutis and iguanas, on a flat trail within an hour of arriving. For families, for anyone with limited mobility, and for a first trip, there is nothing in the country that delivers this much this easily.

Beaches inside the park that are genuinely beautiful and, because access is controlled, never as crowded as the town outside.

And it is close. Quepos sits 33.4 nautical miles from San José, which makes it the easiest of the good regions to reach.

The trade-off

It is busy, and the town is built around that. The road from Quepos to the park entrance is a continuous line of hotels, restaurants and tour desks. Visitors arriving from the Osa or Monteverde often find it jarring.

Compare it to Drake Bay at 83.5 nautical miles, where the wildlife density is higher and you may see nobody all morning. Manuel Antonio trades solitude for accessibility, and whether that is the right trade depends entirely on what kind of trip you are having.

How to visit the park well

Go early. The first entry slot is cooler, the animals are more active, and the trails are emptier. This single decision changes the visit more than any other.

Take a guide. Not required for enjoyment, but the difference in what you see is large — guides carry scopes and know where the sloths have been sitting for the last three days.

Check the access rules before you go. The park manages entry and capacity, and the arrangements change. Park fees and permits are not included in the flight. Turning up without checking is the common mistake.

Beyond the park

Quepos itself is a working town with a marina, and it is where the sportfishing fleet is based.

The beaches south of the park are quieter and free.

And mangrove tours in the estuaries nearby are the underrated activity here — better for birds than the park, and almost nobody on them.

How long to stay

Two nights is enough for the park and a beach day. Three if you want the mangroves or a fishing day. This is not a region that rewards a long stay; it rewards being part of a wider trip.

When to come

We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. Mornings are reliable most of the year. September and October are wet enough that afternoons are usually lost, which matters less here than elsewhere because the park visit should be a morning anyway.

Getting there

The road from San José is one of the better ones in the country, and for many trips driving is the sensible answer. Flying makes sense when Manuel Antonio is paired with somewhere far — coming from Guanacaste or the Osa rather than from the capital. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

Frequently asked

Why is Manuel Antonio so popular?

It delivers sloths, monkeys and beaches on a flat trail within an hour of arriving, which nowhere else does as easily.

What is the trade-off?

It is busy and the town is built around the park. Visitors arriving from remoter regions often find it jarring.

How should I visit the park?

Early, with a guide, and after checking the current access and capacity arrangements.

Is a guide necessary?

Not for enjoyment, but the difference in what you actually see is large.

How many nights?

Two for the park and a beach day, three if you want the mangroves or fishing. It works best as part of a wider trip.

Should I fly or drive?

Drive from San José — the road is good. Fly when you are pairing it with somewhere far, like Guanacaste or the Osa.
