A Caravan operator competes badly where everyone competes. It competes well where half of them cannot go in.
The figures that define the market
The catalogue documents each field's runway. These are the ones that matter:
| Field | Runway | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Drake Bay | 1,000 × 18 m | Generous for the catalogue in the catalogue |
| Barra del Colorado | ~12 m wide | Second narrowest |
| Puerto Jiménez | 822 × 18 m | Limits by length |
| Palmar Sur | 1,400 × 12 m | No restriction |
Eleven metres of width is not a technical detail: it is a barrier to entry. Each such field cuts effective competition down to the operators who can and know how to fly it.
Why that holds margin
At a large field, competition is on price and the client compares equivalent quotes.
At an eleven-metre field the conversation changes: the client's first question stops being how much and becomes whether it can be done. Whoever answers yes with credibility is no longer in an auction.
It is the same dynamic the corpus describes on the passenger side: when the alternative disappears, price elasticity falls.
The three pairs worth knowing
Palmar Sur – Drake, 17.3 nautical miles. The catalogue advises passengers to come in via Palmar once the group exceeds four. For an operator that means Palmar concentrates volume and Drake concentrates margin: two different businesses seventeen miles apart.
Nicoya – Punta Islita, 17.5 nautical miles. Punta Islita is hemmed in by terrain; Nicoya is not and does not close for rain. An operator covering both has its own plan B without leaving the area.
Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado, 53.4 and 59.2 nautical miles from San José. No road, narrow strips, and demand that follows the lodges' calendar rather than the beach season.
What you need, and it is not the aircraft
The type is the minimum condition. What separates operators at these fields is something else:
Track record at the specific field. Knowing when the cloud usually lifts, how much margin to plan, when the ford on the access road is impassable.
Coordination with whoever is on the ground. At several of these destinations the passenger is going to a lodge rather than a hotel, and the lodge runs the chain. Whoever already works with them has the route open.
Fuel planning. Several fields have none. The rotation is calculated around a third point, and that sets the real usable range rather than the handbook one. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
What this market will not solve for you
It is not volume. These are low-frequency fields with demand concentrated in season. A Caravan does not fill its year on Drake and Tortuguero alone.
And it is not easy. More weather days lost, more coordination with third parties, and a smaller operational margin for error than at Liberia or San José.
It is a niche market with defensible margin, not a large one. Worth going in knowing that. Operators we bring on evidence current certification, insurance and fleet documentation before receiving a first assignment.
Frequently asked questions
Which fields restrict most?
Drake Bay is 1,000 × 18 m; the narrow ones are Punta Islita at eight and Barra del Colorado at around twelve.
Why is that an advantage rather than a problem?
Because it cuts effective competition. The client's first question becomes whether it can be done, not how much.
How do Palmar Sur and Drake relate?
They are 17.3 nautical miles apart. Palmar concentrates volume because it does not restrict; Drake concentrates margin because it does.
Is having the aircraft enough?
No. You need track record at the field, coordination with ground operators and fuel planning around a third point.
Does this market give volume?
No. It is low frequency and seasonal. It is defensible margin, not volume.
Which other pair is worth covering?
Nicoya and Punta Islita, 17.5 nautical miles apart: one closes for terrain and rain, the other does not.
