Taking on light cargo work as a charter operator

What cargo work requires that passenger flying does not, which loads suit small aircraft, and how it is priced differently.

Cargo is the most reliable counterweight to tourism seasonality available to a regional operator, and most passenger operators never look at it because it arrives through different doors and asks different questions.

Why it holds up in September

A part that is needed is needed. Perishables move on their own schedule, medical logistics does not pause, and a company waiting on a component is not choosing between flying and driving for scenic reasons.

The demand is smaller, steadier and almost uncorrelated with the tourism calendar, which is exactly the shape a regional operator's low season needs.

What it requires that passenger flying does not

Securing. Loads have to be restrained properly, and that is a procedure rather than an improvisation with straps.

Documentation for what is aboard. Contents, weights, and for some categories considerably more. Find out what applies to the loads you intend to carry before quoting the first one, not after. We run scheduled private flights across Central America; any other destination worldwide is coordinated on request.

And a different conversation about liability. A passenger complains; a shipper claims. The terms need to say what happens if a load is damaged or delayed.

Check what your policy actually covers before the first load. Cover written for passenger carriage does not automatically extend to goods, and discovering that after a claim is the expensive order to find out in.

Which loads suit small aircraft

Small, urgent and valuable. Instruments, parts, samples, documents.

Perishables on short legs. Tortuguero at 53.4 nautical miles or Quepos at 33.4 are exactly the kind of distance where air makes sense for something that cannot wait.

And loads going where the road does not. The same logic that produces passenger demand produces cargo demand, for the same reason. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

What does not suit it: anything heavy for its volume, and anything where a truck arriving tomorrow is acceptable. The second category is larger than it looks, and quoting it wastes the shipper's time as well as yours.

How it is priced differently

Not per seat and often not per hour. Per rotation, or per kilo on a published basis for regular work. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

Cargo clients compare on delivered cost and reliability rather than on aircraft, which means the pitch is different: nobody cares which aircraft, everybody cares what time it lands.

That makes it a harder market to be mediocre in and an easier one to keep. A shipper who has found a reliable operator stops shopping, which is rarely true of a tourist.

How to start

With one client, not a service line. A single company with a recurring need teaches you the procedures on a real load rather than in theory.

And with your existing configuration. Converting the aircraft is a later decision that should follow demand, not precede it. A Drake Bay run at 83.5 nautical miles carrying boxes instead of passengers is the same flight. Operators we bring on evidence current certification, insurance and fleet documentation before receiving a first assignment.

Give it two quarters before judging. Cargo relationships build slowly and then hold, which is the opposite shape from tourism work and takes patience to read correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Why does cargo hold up in low season?

Because a part that is needed is needed. The demand is smaller, steadier and uncorrelated with tourism.

What does it require that passenger work does not?

Proper securing, documentation for what is aboard, and terms covering damage or delay.

Which loads suit small aircraft?

Small, urgent and valuable; perishables on short legs; and anything going where the road does not.

What does not suit it?

Anything heavy for its volume, and anything where a truck tomorrow is acceptable.

How is it priced?

Per rotation or per kilo on a published basis. Clients compare delivered cost and reliability, not aircraft.

Does my insurance cover goods?

Check before the first load. Cover written for passenger carriage does not automatically extend to cargo.

How should I start?

With one client and your existing configuration. Converting the aircraft should follow demand, not precede it.
