Selling direct versus selling through a marketplace

What a direct booking actually costs you, what a channel booking costs, and the mix that most regional operators end up with.

«Direct is free» is the most expensive sentence in this business, and it is repeated in every operator meeting. Direct is not free. It is paid in a currency that does not appear in the accounts.

What a direct booking actually costs

The enquiry work. Every unqualified question you answered this month, at the value of your hour.

The channel that produced it. Your site, your listing, the lodge relationship you maintain with visits and time.

And the discount. If a direct client negotiated ten percent, that is your distribution cost, just paid to the client instead of an intermediary.

An operator who counts all three usually finds direct is cheaper than a channel — but not by the margin they assumed, and not on every booking.

The gap is widest on first-time clients, where the enquiry work is heaviest and the discount largest, and narrowest on repeat ones, where both approach zero.

What a channel booking costs

The operator is paid the full flight at their usual rate: our intermediation is not deducted from what they charge.

The enquiry arrives resolved, the price expectation is set before it reaches you, and you spend minutes rather than an afternoon. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

What you give up is the relationship — or rather, the first contact. Whether you keep the client afterwards depends on the terms you signed, and that clause is worth more than the rate.

Where each one wins, clearly

Direct wins on repeat clients, always, and paying distribution on a client who already flew with you is the worst trade available.

Direct wins on corporate accounts, because they want a named contact and a standing arrangement.

A channel wins on the client who does not know you exist. Someone searching «private flight to Drake Bay» — 83.5 nautical miles from San José — is not looking for your name.

And a channel wins on short notice, where the request appears with two days and reaches whoever is listed and free.

The mix most regional operators end up with

Not a choice between the two. Direct for the base of repeat and corporate work, a channel for the edges: new clients, gap days, routes you do not position.

An operator with only direct grows slowly and safely. One with only a channel is exposed to a decision they do not control. Neither is a strategy on its own.

The proportion is worth revisiting once a year rather than set and forgotten, because it should move as your repeat base grows. A channel that made obvious sense in year one should be doing less of the work by year three.

The question that decides it for you

Not «which is cheaper». It is «how much of my month is already spoken for?»

If your calendar is eighty percent booked by repeat clients, a channel is a marginal tool and you should treat it as one. If it is forty percent, the arithmetic is entirely different and the channel is filling days that were producing nothing.

A San José–Tamarindo of 97.1 nautical miles pays the same either way. What differs is what it cost you to get it. We run scheduled private flights across Central America; any other destination worldwide is coordinated on request.

Frequently asked questions

Is direct really free?

No. It is paid in enquiry time, in the channel that produced it, and in the discount negotiated.

Is direct still cheaper?

Usually, but not by the margin assumed and not on every booking.

What do I give up with a channel?

The first contact. Whether you keep the client depends on the terms you signed.

Where does direct clearly win?

Repeat clients and corporate accounts. Paying distribution on a client who already flew with you is the worst trade available.

Where does a channel clearly win?

Clients who do not know you exist, and short-notice requests.

What question decides the mix?

How much of your month is already spoken for. At eighty percent booked a channel is marginal; at forty it is not.
