Placencia — Belize

The runway at Placencia crosses the peninsula. Sea on one side, lagoon on the other, and a strip of paved tarmac between them at 1 metre above the water. Because of the prevailing sea breeze, take-offs and landings are typically flown eastbound, which means most arrivals come in over the lagoon and most departures go out over the Caribbean.

Placencia itself is a sixteen-mile finger of sand running south from the mainland, with a fishing village at the tip that has become the centre of Belize's southern tourism.

Paved strip crossing the peninsula east to west, at 1 metre (3 ft) elevation. ICAO: MZPL. Coordinates: 16°32′14″N, 88°21′40″W. CTAF 122.8 MHz. Daylight operations. Tropic Air and Maya Island Air operate to Belize City International, Belize City Municipal, Dangriga and Punta Gorda.

This is a short daylight-only strip, Cessna Caravan and Islander class, with weight discipline.

Operational notes that matter and are seldom published: private flights are permitted, but parking must be coordinated in advance with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air, and the airport has no security. Any private movement into PLJ should have the ground arrangements confirmed before departure rather than on arrival.

Things to do near Placencia

This is Placencia's signature, and it is highly specific. Gladden Spit, 40 kilometres offshore, is where cubera, mutton and dog snapper mass to spawn — and where whale sharks come to feed on the spawn. The aggregation is tied to the full moon between roughly March and June, with April and May the most reliable window, and access is regulated by permit through the Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve.

It is not a year-round attraction and should never be sold as one. Outside the season, the reef, the Silk Cayes and the diving remain excellent.

The peninsula and behind it. Placencia village has, per Guinness, one of the narrowest main streets in the world — the Sidewalk, a concrete path a metre or so wide running the length of the village, which was the main thoroughfare before the road arrived. Seine Bight and Maya Beach occupy the peninsula north of the village.

Inland, across the lagoon, is Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary — the world's first jaguar preserve, declared in 1986, covering 150,000 acres of the Maya Mountains. Jaguars are present in numbers and almost never seen; what you get is the forest, the waterfalls, Victoria Peak on the skyline, and a good chance of ocelot or tapir sign.

Monkey River, south, is a boat trip up a blackwater river with howler monkeys, manatees at the mouth and one of the better guide traditions in Belize.

The peninsula road was paved around 2010, and Placencia is still adjusting to it. Before that the sixteen miles in were a slow rattle over sand and gravel, and the village at the end was correspondingly quiet; the paving brought development north along the spit at Maya Beach and Seine Bight, while the village itself has changed less than the road might suggest.

The two sides of the peninsula are entirely different water. The Caribbean side has the beach and the swell; the lagoon side is flat, shallow and full of birds, and it is where the manatees are.

When to fly

When to fly

Southern Belize is markedly wetter than the north — Stann Creek and Toledo receive several times the rainfall of Corozal. Dry season roughly February to May; wet June to November, heaviest June to October. Hurricane season June to November, peak August to October.

The whale shark season falls at the end of the dry months, which is fortunate for both the wildlife and the flying.
