Punta Gorda — Belize
Toledo is the district Belizeans call "the forgotten south", and it is the most interesting part of the country for anyone who has already seen the reef. This is the wettest, greenest and most heavily Maya part of Belize — Mopan and Q'eqchi' villages in the foothills, cacao under the forest canopy, and rainfall that can exceed four metres a year.
Punta Gorda, the district town, sits on Amatique Bay looking across at Guatemala. The airport is inside the town, less than a kilometre from the water.

The water approach is the easier part; the runway length is the planning factor.

Punta Gorda is the departure point for the boat to Puerto Barrios and Livingston in Guatemala — roughly an hour across Amatique Bay, with immigration formalities at both ends. It is the standard route between southern Belize and eastern Guatemala, and it is far quicker than going around by road.
By air, Puerto Barrios is about 20 minutes and Livingston is boat-only. For itineraries linking Toledo, the Río Dulce and Tikal, PND is the natural hinge. Confirm immigration arrangements in advance for any air movement.

Toledo is Belize's chocolate district. Cacao has been grown here continuously since the Maya classic period, and the modern industry is built on small Maya-owned farms supplying single-origin producers — Belize's cacao goes into some of the better bean-to-bar chocolate in the world.
The Chocolate Festival of Belize, held in Punta Gorda each May, is the district's biggest event and combines farm visits, tastings and Maya cultural programming. Farm tours run year-round from PG.
The Maya sites. Lubaantun, 45 minutes northwest, is unusual in the Maya world: built of precisely cut stone blocks laid without mortar, with rounded corners and no carved stelae. It is also the site attached to the Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull story of 1924 — a claim now comprehensively discredited, the skull having been shown to be a modern manufacture, but which still draws visitors.
Nim Li Punit, on the highway north, has one of the tallest stelae in Belize and a hilltop position with long views over the Toledo foothills.
