Comayagua holds "the oldest working clock in the Americas", in a cathedral opened on 8 December 1711. And it has a logistical advantage nothing else in the network shares: it sits beside Palmerola, the base itself.
The clock
It is the oldest working clock in the Americas.
It still runs, and every 31 December it rings in the new year from the cathedral tower.
Which means it is not a museum piece. It is an operating mechanism that has kept the city's time for centuries.
The cathedral
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception opened on 8 December 1711.
It houses the clock, and anchors Comayagua's historic centre.
The city was Honduras's capital through much of the colonial and early republican period, and the old town retains that character.
Why it works logistically
Palmerola (XPL) is in Comayagua, and it is the base of the Honduran network.
Which makes it the only destination in the country that requires no flight at all. You see it before departing or on arrival, without spending a day.
Network flight times from Palmerola:
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Tegucigalpa (TGU) | 56 km (35 mi) | 15 minutes |
| San Pedro Sula (SAP) | 123 km (76 mi) | 25 minutes |
| La Ceiba (LCE) | 172 km (107 mi) | 35 minutes |
| Utila (UII) | 208 km (129 mi) | 45 minutes |
| Roatán (RTB) | 245 km (152 mi) | 50 minutes |
The day it enables
08:00 — Comayagua's historic centre and cathedral 10:30 — Depart Palmerola 11:15 — Land at Roatán 13:00 — Reef
Colonial old town and Caribbean in one day, without the first consuming any flight time.
Or in reverse: land at Palmerola on the way home and close the trip with the cathedral before your international departure.
The centre of the country
Celaque National Park: protects 24,040 hectares (59,404 acres) with around 770 plant species, established by Decree No. 976-80 on 1 January 1980. It holds the country's highest peak, and its cloud forest is among the best preserved in Central America.
The name "Celaque": comes from Lenca and refers to water — the massif is the headwater for numerous rivers, which explains both the cloud forest and the constant humidity of the ascent.
Lake Yojoa: is the country's largest natural body of water, offering navigation and waterbird watching.
And Comayagua mountain, with its own cloud forest, right beside the base.
La Tigra, 20 minutes away
7,571 hectares (18,708 acres) of cloud forest 15 km (9 mi) northeast of Tegucigalpa.
Established the same day as Celaque — 1 January 1980, under the same Decree 976-80 — which was the founding act of Honduras's protected area system.
It has zoning, with a restricted-access Core Zone, so verify which sector you are visiting and what is permitted there, particularly for night activities.
And Tegucigalpa is 15 minutes from Palmerola, which puts La Tigra within half a day.
Comayagua Honduras from the air
The Comayagua valley with the city and the Palmerola runway on it.
Comayagua mountain to the east, with its cloud forest.
And the relationship between the country's centre and its two coasts, which from Palmerola are 35 and 50 minutes away.
Before you book
Confirm hours for the cathedral and the historic centre.
Comfortable shoes for the colonial cobbles.
And one date note: 31 December, when the clock rings in the new year, is the busiest day of the year here.
Why the base location matters
Palmerola sits in Comayagua, which is unusual: the network's base is itself a destination.
Which means the city fits into arrival or departure day without consuming a flight or a night.
Confirm cathedral hours before planning around the clock, since they vary.
