Private flights across Central America run from six bases in seven countries, with no destination more than 1 hour 15 minutes from its capital. Here is what each airstrip reaches — and what the road alternative costs.
Costa Rica — from San José (SJO)
La Fortuna / Arenal (FON) — 71 km (44 mi): 15 minutes · road: 3–5 hours Tortuguero (TTQ) — 99 km (62 mi): 20 minutes · road: no road at all Limón (LIO) — 130 km (81 mi): 25 minutes · road: most of a day Drake (DRK) — 155 km (96 mi): 30 minutes · road: full day, 4WD, river crossings Liberia (LIR) — 161 km (100 mi): 35 minutes · road: 4–5 hours Golfito (GLF) — 187 km (116 mi): 40 minutes Puerto Jiménez (PJM) — 191 km (119 mi): 40 minutes
Plus Nicoya's three — Tamarindo (TNO), Nosara (NOB) and Punta Islita (PBP) — where the peninsula's roads are dirt in several sections.
And Palmar Sur (PMZ) for the Sierpe mangroves and Corcovado's northern flank.
Belize — from Belize City (BZE)
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Caye Caulker (CYC) | 36 km (22 mi) | 10 minutes |
| San Pedro / Ambergris (SPR) | 55 km (34 mi) | 15 minutes |
| Dangriga (DGA) | 62 km (39 mi) | 15 minutes |
| Placencia (PLJ) | 112 km (70 mi) | 25 minutes |
| Punta Gorda (PND) | 168 km (104 mi) | 35 minutes |
Plus Corozal, in the north, at 15 minutes against 2.5 hours by car.
No airstrip is more than 35 minutes from another, which makes Belize a circuit rather than a series of destinations.
Guatemala — from La Aurora (GUA)
Quetzaltenango (AAZ) — 109 km (68 mi): 25 minutes — airstrip at roughly 2,371 m (7,780 ft), meaning longer takeoff distances and payload limits Retalhuleu (RER) — 126 km (78 mi): 25 minutes Río Dulce (LCF) — 203 km (126 mi): 40 minutes · road and river: ~6 hours Puerto Barrios (PBR) — 245 km (152 mi): 50 minutes Flores / Tikal (FRS) — 269 km (167 mi): 55 minutes · road: full day
Honduras — from Palmerola (XPL)
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Tegucigalpa (TGU) | 56 km (35 mi) | 15 minutes |
| San Pedro Sula (SAP) | 123 km (76 mi) | 25 minutes |
| La Ceiba (LCE) | 172 km (107 mi) | 35 minutes |
| Utila (UII) | 208 km (129 mi) | 45 minutes |
| Roatán (RTB) | 245 km (152 mi) | 50 minutes |
And between the islands: minutes. Roatán to Utila is roughly ten, against most of a day by ferry and road.
Panama — from Tocumen (PTY)
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Río Hato (RIH) | 113 km (70 mi) | 25 minutes |
| Chitré (CTD) | 165 km (103 mi) | 35 minutes |
| Bocas del Toro (BOC) | 316 km (196 mi) | 1 hour 5 minutes |
| David (DAV) | 344 km (214 mi) | 1 hour 10 minutes |
Plus Contadora (OTD) — the only airstrip in the Pearl Islands — Changuinola (CHX) for La Amistad, and Santiago (SYP) for Veraguas and Coiba.
One thing worth knowing: commercial flights to Bocas leave from Albrook (PAC), not Tocumen, requiring a 30 to 60 minute cross-city transfer, a three-hour buffer, and usually an overnight in Panama City. A charter from Tocumen removes all three.
Nicaragua — from Managua (MGA)
Bluefields (BEF) — 261 km (162 mi): 55 minutes · bus: ~8 hours Bonanza (BZA) — 264 km (164 mi): 55 minutes Corn Island (RNI) — 337 km (209 mi): 1 hour 10 minutes · airstrip operates 6:00 a.m. to sunset, no night operations Puerto Cabezas / Bilwi (PUZ) — 368 km (229 mi): 1 hour 15 minutes · bus: 10–12 hours
El Salvador — Ilopango (ILS)
Ilopango handles general aviation in San Salvador, 30 km (19 mi) from the international airport.
The country is too small for domestic flying — everything is reached by road. The coast is 40 minutes, the volcanoes two hours.
Which makes the charter's role here arriving and leaving on your schedule — and specifically, landing early enough to clear the 11:00 a.m. volcano gate.
What the network is actually for
Windows, not speed.
Corcovado's wildlife moves 5:30 to 8:00 a.m., while the park runs 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Tikal's sunrise entry opens at 4:00 a.m., and no commercial flight lands early enough.
El Salvador's volcano parks close entry at 11:00 sharp.
Rincón de la Vieja's trails close at noon.
And Tortuguero's canals perform at dawn, which the scheduled route misses by landing mid-morning.
The pricing
Per aircraft, not per seat — round trip, up to five passengers.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft: the fare depends on the national network, the date and the aircraft assigned.
Against a scheduled domestic flight: San José to Tortuguero runs $240–300 per person round trip.
What to declare when booking
Passenger count and weight, accurately.
Bulky gear — boards, rods, camera equipment, dive kit — handled within aircraft limits without scheduled operations' special baggage fees.
Any hard window — a permit time, a tide, a gate closing, a dive surface interval.
And your destination airstrip, since high-elevation fields tighten payload limits.
Planning private flights Central America
Resolve the fixed points first — permits, caps and any hard window — since those determine your dates rather than the other way around.
Then the season, which in this region decides more than the month suggests.
And keep a day of flexibility if the objective depends on weather, light or tide.

Tell us your dates, your passenger count and what you want to do.
Weather decides operations, and the call belongs to the pilot. Where the objective is weather-dependent, keep the date flexible — that flexibility is the product.
