Diving in Belize means the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 — and its dive sites demand very different levels. Matching yours to the right one is the planning that matters.
Where to dive, by level
Ambergris — the country's greatest concentration of dive centres, with access to Hol Chan, a natural channel 23 m (75 ft) wide with $5 entry, and Shark Ray Alley, about 6.4 km (4 mi) south of San Pedro.
Profile: shallow reef and channel, workable across a wide range of levels. Flight: 15 minutes from Belize City.
South Water Caye — it offers outer wall diving, which changes the type of dive entirely.
On the wall, wall wildlife differs from the shallow reef, and the vertical structure demands different technique. Access from Dangriga, at 15 minutes by air.
Placencia — access to the southern reef and southern cayes. Gladden Spit holds more than 25 species of reef fish, and Gladden Spit and the Silk Cayes were designated a marine reserve around 2000. Flight: 25 minutes.
The Great Blue Hole — 318 m (1,043 ft) across and 124 m (407 ft) deep, on Lighthouse Reef, roughly 70 km (43 mi) offshore.
Its stalactites sit at 40 m (131 ft), with the formation zone starting around 33 m (108 ft).
It requires deep diving certification, recent experience and solid buoyancy control.
Wall diving, specifically
It is not interchangeable with shallow reef.
On a wall there is no bottom reference. The structure falls vertically, and buoyancy control is the determining skill — without a visible floor it is easy to descend without noticing.
And nitrogen narcosis is a factor past a certain depth: euphoria and overconfidence, precisely the wrong combination on a vertical descent. It is reversible by ascending.
What is required: your own dive computer, matching certification and recent experience.
The conditions
Check recent conditions with the dive centre, because visibility varies.
And a seasonal factor: the swell that builds the coast's breaks reduces underwater visibility. The rough-sea months are not the best diving months.
Do not dive on your departure day
Cabin pressure reduction after a dive can trigger decompression sickness.
And after a deep dive — like the Blue Hole — the required interval is longer.
A charter lets you set the departure time your dive profile requires, rather than fitting a fixed schedule.
What to verify before booking
Which certification each site requires.
Equipment condition and inspection frequency.
Guide-to-diver ratio.
Where the nearest hyperbaric chamber is and how long it takes.
Whether the centre carries emergency oxygen on board.
And that your insurance covers diving and medical evacuation, which standard policies frequently exclude.
The network
Belize City (BZE) is the base.
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Caye Caulker (CYC) | 36 km (22 mi) | 10 minutes |
| San Pedro / Ambergris (SPR) | 55 km (34 mi) | 15 minutes |
| Dangriga (DGA) | 62 km (39 mi) | 15 minutes |
| Placencia (PLJ) | 112 km (70 mi) | 25 minutes |
| Punta Gorda (PND) | 168 km (104 mi) | 35 minutes |
Which means a dive circuit across different profiles with short hops, rather than a single base.
A dive day
07:00 — Depart Belize City 07:20 — Land at Ambergris 09:00 — First dive, Hol Chan 13:00 — Second dive 16:00 — Surface 18:00 — Departure
With the caveat that two dives and a flight the same day requires respecting the interval. The sensible arrangement is a surface day before departure.
The conduct
No touching coral. Brief contact kills the polyps.
No standing on the bottom.
Buoyancy control, which on a wall is safety and conservation at once.
No feeding wildlife.
No chasing or touching animals.
No collecting anything, living or dead.
Reef-safe sunscreen.
And anchor only where permitted.
Before you book
Current certification and logbook, especially after a break.
Your own dive computer for wall profiles.
Check recent conditions with the centre.
And do not dive on your departure day.
Diving in Belize from the air
The complete barrier, giving the scale of the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere.
The Great Blue Hole as a dark circle against turquoise, with high sun for maximum contrast.
And the outer wall drop, visible as an abrupt colour change at the reef edge.
Fly with AeroRide
No Belize airstrip is more than 35 minutes from another. Tell us your route, your certification and your dive schedule.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers. Final pricing depends on route, date and aircraft assigned.
If you are diving deep, tell us. We can set the departure to your surface interval rather than the other way around.

Frequently asked questions
What certification do you need for the Blue Hole?
Deep diving certification, with recent experience and solid buoyancy control. The formation zone starts around 33 m and the stalactites sit at 40 m.
Where is the best diving in Belize?
It depends on level. Ambergris for Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley across a wide range, South Water Caye for outer wall diving, Placencia for the southern reef and Gladden Spit, and the Blue Hole for deep-certified divers.
Can you dive the day you fly?
Not on your departure day. Cabin pressure reduction after a dive can trigger decompression sickness, and after a deep dive the required interval is longer.
What skill matters most on a wall?
Buoyancy control, since there is no bottom reference and it is easy to descend without noticing. Your own dive computer is also required for those profiles.
When is visibility worst?
In the months when swell builds the coast's breaks, since that stirs sediment. The rough-sea months are not the best diving months.
Is Belize's reef protected?
Yes. The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, and the barrier is the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere.
