El Valle de Antón is a town built inside a volcanic caldera that was a lake for roughly 500,000 years. It sits 30 kilometers (19 mi) from Panama's beach coast — and both are 25 minutes from the capital by air.
A town in a crater
The caldera was a lake for about 500,000 years.
When the water found an outlet and drained, it left a flat, fertile floor ringed by crater walls. That is where the town settled.
It is one of very few settlements in the world built inside a volcanic caldera, and that explains everything else: the climate, the vegetation and the shape of the valley.
The climate
588 to 600 m (1,929–1,969 ft) elevation.
18 to 20 °C (64–68 °F).
The contrast with the Pacific coast is immediate — bring a layer even if you are coming from the beach.
That microclimate is what makes the valley a coastal escape, and what sustains its vegetation.
What is in the valley
The crater walls, with trails running them.
A 70 m (230 ft) waterfall.
Hot springs, with $5 entry.
And the town market, with craftwork and local produce.
Typical hours: Monday to Sunday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with entries around $3 foreign visitors, $2 Panamanians at several access points.
Over 300 bird species in the valley's surroundings — altitude, humidity and forest on the crater walls concentrate remarkable diversity in a small area.
The coast alongside
Coclé holds Panama's hotel coast, with resorts, many all-inclusive.
Playa Blanca and Playa Farallón are the reference stretches.
One clarification that prevents disappointment: Playa Farallón is resort territory, not a surf break.
And Isla Farallón, offshore, is not a beach island — it is a volcanic formation populated by seabirds. The product is the boat approach and the colonies, not sunbathing.
Punta Chame
Panama's kitesurf spot
, on the central Pacific coast.
Not in the Bahía de Parita and not in Azuero
— a placement error that appears in itineraries.
Panama sits in the trade wind belt
, and the peninsula's shape channels that wind over interior water.
But tide decides the session
with mid or high water, sailing conditions. With falling or low water, the sailable area shrinks sharply.
And watch for rays at low tide — shuffle your feet entering and leaving, so they move off rather than being startled.

By road from the capital, the journey runs around 140 km (87 mi).
Which turns a full-day excursion into half a day, leaving room to combine valley and coast.

From the air
The complete caldera, with the town on its flat floor and the walls closing it around the whole perimeter.
It is the only perspective that shows the crater's shape, which from inside the valley is invisible.
The elevation range: the crater floor at 588 to 600 m, walls reaching 800 and up to 1,000 m (2,625–3,281 ft). From the air that range is remarkable.
And La India Dormida, the formation that gives the valley its profile — a silhouette from the ground, part of the caldera rim from above.
Timing: low-angle light, which models the crater walls. Overhead sun flattens them.
Before you book
A warm layer for the valley's 18 to 20 °C.
Trail shoes for the crater walls.
Cash for the market and entries.
Binoculars if the 300-plus bird species interest you.
And confirm hours, typically 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Frequently asked questions
Why is El Valle in a crater?
Because the caldera was a lake for roughly 500,000 years. When the water drained it left a flat, fertile floor ringed by crater walls, and the town settled there.
What is the climate in El Valle de Antón?
18 to 20 °C, thanks to an elevation of 588 to 600 m. The contrast with the Pacific coast is immediate, so bring a layer even coming from the beach.
Is Isla Farallón a beach island?
No. It is a volcanic formation populated by seabirds. The product is the boat approach and the colonies, not sunbathing. Playa Farallón, on the mainland, is resort territory rather than a surf break.
Where is Panama's kitesurf spot?
Punta Chame, on the central Pacific coast — not in the Bahía de Parita or Azuero. Tide decides the session: mid or high water for sailing, and watch for rays at low tide.
How long does it take to reach the valley?
Twenty-five minutes by air to Río Hato, then about 30 km via highway 71. By road from the capital the journey runs around 140 km.
How many birds are in the valley?
Over 300 species. Altitude, humidity and forest on the crater walls concentrate remarkable diversity in a small area.
