Roatán: which side of the island to stay on

Where to stay in Roatán: West Bay, West End and Sandy Bay sit on the same reef, ten minutes apart. Where the chamber is, and cruise ship days.

Deciding where to stay in Roatán starts with a split: an urbanized west coast and an undeveloped east. Within the west, three sectors sit ten minutes apart — and the choice between them matters less than most guides suggest, with one important exception.

The three western sectors

West Bay occupies the southwestern point, with the reef right off the beach. It is the main tourist zone.

West End works well: walkable, with varied dining and a small beach.

Sandy Bay holds the island's medical infrastructure.

And all three sit on the same reef and inside the same marine park, which means reef access does not depend on which you pick.

The distances

Water taxi connects West End to West Bay in about 10 minutes.

Airport to West Bay: about 30 minutes by car.

Which means the three western sectors function as a single unit, and moving between them is a matter of minutes.

The exception that does matter

Roatán's only hyperbaric chamber is at Anthony's Key, in Sandy Bay.

A decompression incident on the east coast or at Camp Bay means a road transfer across the island to reach it.

Which means: if diving is the main purpose, sector choice becomes a safety consideration rather than a convenience one.

Before booking a dive centre, ask how long that transfer takes from your accommodation — and confirm your insurance covers diving and medical evacuation.

How to choose

West Bay if you want beach with reef in front and do not mind the crowds.

West End if you want to walk, eat varied and have less density, with a small beach.

Sandy Bay: if diving is the main purpose, for proximity to medical infrastructure.

And the island's east: if you want minimal development, with Camp Bay as the kitesurf zone — though you need a vehicle there.

The cruise ship calendar

Ships dock at Coxen Hole and Mahogany.

West Bay fills on those days.

Check the docking schedule when you plan, and use those days for the east end or for the hop to Utila.

The reef

The Bay Islands sit on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System

, which holds more than 90% of the marine species known in the Caribbean.

The Bay Islands National Marine Park extends 25 km (15 mi) from each island's coast, totaling roughly 650,000 hectares (1.6 million acres).

Water: 25 to 28 °C (77–82 °F): year round, so no thick wetsuit — the season is decided by visibility, not temperature.

And identify in advance where the reef sits relative to your accommodation: in some sectors it is off the beach, in others it needs a boat.

Getting to where to stay in Roatán

Roatán (RTB) — 245 km (152 mi) from Palmerola: 50 minutes

Rest of the network from Palmerola (XPL)

Destination Distance Flight time
Tegucigalpa (TGU) 56 km (35 mi) 15 minutes
San Pedro Sula (SAP) 123 km (76 mi) 25 minutes
La Ceiba (LCE) 172 km (107 mi) 35 minutes
Utila (UII) 208 km (129 mi) 45 minutes

One honest note

Roatán takes direct international flights from several US cities. If Roatán is your whole trip, fly commercial. A charter earns its price on the hop between islands and on the mainland connection.

Do not dive on your departure day

Cabin pressure reduction after a dive can trigger decompression sickness.

A charter lets you set the departure time your dive profile requires.

A day on arrival

08:00 — Depart Palmerola 08:50 — Land at Roatán 09:15 — Arrive West Bay 10:30 — First dive 14:30 — Second dive 17:00 — Sunset at West End

Two dives on arrival day, which by ground transfer and ferry would not be viable.

Before you book

Identify where the reef is relative to your accommodation.

Ask about the transfer time to Anthony's Key, in Sandy Bay.

Check the cruise ship docking calendar.

Reef-safe sunscreen — conventional formulas damage coral.

And current certification if diving is on the plan.

What else is in the islands

Utila, at 45 minutes from Palmerola, where whale sharks have no fixed season and diving with them is prohibited by law — snorkel only, under guidelines approved by Honduras's National Congress in 2008.

Cayos Cochinos

, a protected area with Garifuna communities living on it.

And Guanaja

, the third Bay Island.
