The Puntarenas–Paquera ferry works, it is cheap and plenty of people use it. We are not going to pretend otherwise. What follows is the calculation with both options on the table.
The two routes
| Ferry | Flight | |
|---|---|---|
| Journey | Central Valley → Puntarenas → Paquera → Tambor | San José → Tambor |
| Air distance | — | 50.2 NM |
| Links in the chain | 3 | 1 |
| Cost | Low | From 895 USD per aircraft |
What the ferry does well
It is cheap, and with two people the difference is large. It also crosses the Gulf of Nicoya, which is a pleasant run rather than something to endure.
If you are travelling without urgency, on a tight budget and with open dates, the ferry is the right answer and we say so plainly.
What the ferry actually costs
The ticket price is not the cost. The cost is the chain:
First, reaching Puntarenas. A good hour and a half from the Central Valley, plus whatever margin you leave.
Second, the sailing. It runs to fixed times and does not wait. We confirm the applicable ferry timetable in the quote, because it changes with the date and the operation. Missing one does not cost money, it costs the whole next slot.
Third, the crossing itself. A little over an hour of gulf.
And fourth, the final road leg from Paquera to Tambor or Santa Teresa, partly unpaved.
Added up with realistic margins, a long half day. Not because any link is slow, but because there are four and they have to be fitted together.
Where the calculation breaks
On one specific point: if you miss the ferry you do not lose half an hour, you lose the next sailing.
That is the same pattern the catalogue describes at the Braulio Carrillo pass and at Paso Canoas. What you pay for is not the average time, it is the spread.
With flexible dates that spread does not matter. With an international flight out the following day, it does.
When to fly
With a group of four or more. Divide the fare among the passengers and compare it with four ferry tickets plus the hire car plus half a day. The sums change sign sooner than people expect. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
With a tight schedule. If you land intercontinental in the morning and want to sleep in Santa Teresa that night, the ferry leaves little margin.
And on the way back more than on the way out. On the return there is a departing flight waiting, and the ferry is the one link that cannot be brought forward.
When to drive
With two people and a week ahead of you, the ferry wins clearly.
If the trip includes the coast on the way to Tambor — Montezuma, Cóbano, the Cabo Blanco reserve — the car is not a cost, it is the trip.
What neither option includes
From Tambor airport to Santa Teresa there is still about forty minutes by road. The flight does not drop you on the beach, and that transfer is arranged separately.
It is only fair to say it: if Santa Teresa is the final destination, the flight saves you the ferry and the long road, not the last leg.
