Charter or scheduled in Panama and Nicaragua

Panama has a domestic network and Nicaragua barely does. This page explains what each covers and why the recommendation flips between them.

These two countries are neighbours on the map and are nothing alike for this question. They are worth treating separately because the recommendation flips.

Panama: there is a network, and it works

Panama has scheduled domestic service to several of the catalogue's destinations. Where scheduled service exists to a destination, its frequencies and times are set by the airline, not by us.

Bocas del Toro is 161.3 nautical miles from Panama City and has frequency. For one or two passengers on normal dates, scheduled is cheaper and leaves you on Isla Colón exactly as we would.

Guna Yala is 81.1 nautical miles and also has service, though thinner and on small aircraft, constrained by the archipelago's short strips.

What is left for charter in Panama

The permit, which governs everything. Tourist access to Guna Yala requires authorisation from the community authorities, and that does not depend on the type of flight. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales. What charter adds is being able to fit the flight date to the permit, rather than the other way round.

The group with baggage, because scheduled service to these destinations uses small aircraft with strict per-passenger weight and volume limits — tight enough that dive or surf gear rarely fits without arrangement.

And the itinerary the network does not draw. David is 58.0 nautical miles from Bocas: linking the Chiriquí Pacific with the Bocas Caribbean by scheduled service goes through the capital.

That is a detour of more than three hundred nautical miles to cover fifty-eight, and it is the direct consequence of a hub-and-spoke network centred on Panama City.

Nicaragua: there is barely a network

Here the answer flips.

Corn Island is 182.4 nautical miles from Managua, the longest leg in the catalogue, and it is over water. Scheduled service exists but is thin, on small aircraft, with frequencies that sell out.

It is not a question of price: it is availability. In season, a scheduled seat to Corn Island may simply not exist for your date, and waiting for one to be released rarely works.

And the Caribbean coast generally has the most limited ground services in the network: not every field has fuel or handling at all hours, which shapes the rotation. Ground services at these fields are limited and vary by aerodrome and by hour.

The recommendation, country by country

In Panama, start by looking at scheduled. Travelling as a couple to Bocas on normal dates, it probably solves it.

In Nicaragua, start by checking whether there is a seat. If there is and it fits, use it. If there is not — and often there is not — charter is not competing with scheduled: it is what is left. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

It is the difference between a market with an alternative and one without, and it changes how each trip is best planned: in Panama you compare, in Nicaragua you take what there is and you take it earlier.

Frequently asked questions

Does Panama have scheduled domestic flights?

Yes, to several catalogue destinations. Bocas del Toro is 161.3 nautical miles from the capital and has frequency.

What is left for charter in Panama?

Fitting the date to the Guna Yala permit, groups with baggage, and itineraries the network does not draw.

And in Nicaragua?

There is barely a network. Corn Island is 182.4 nautical miles from Managua with thin service and frequencies that sell out.

Is it a question of price in Nicaragua?

No, of availability. In season a scheduled seat may simply not exist for your date.

Why is Chiriquí not linked to Bocas by scheduled service?

Because the network is hub-and-spoke on the capital: fifty-eight nautical miles become a detour of over three hundred.

Are there services at every field?

No. The Caribbean coast has the most limited in the network, which shapes the rotation. Ground services at these fields are limited and vary by aerodrome and by hour.

What should I check first in each country?

In Panama, scheduled service. In Nicaragua, whether there is a seat: if there is and it fits, use it.
