Costa Rica has domestic airlines that work and cover the main routes. If your destination is on their network and their times suit you, fly with them. It is cheaper and there is nothing more to discuss.
This page is about the cases where that does not hold.
What scheduled does well
It covers the highest-demand destinations from San José — Tamarindo, Nosara, Quepos, Drake, Puerto Jiménez — with daily departures in season.
Per seat it is unbeatable travelling alone or as a couple. A charter is paid for as a whole aircraft, so with two people the comparison is not remotely close. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
The five cases where it stops being enough
1. The timetable does not match your arrival
Domestic flights leave at fixed times and intercontinental flights land at theirs. When they do not line up, the difference is not two hours of waiting: it is a night in San José and a day of your holiday.
It is the most common case and the one people least anticipate when booking.
2. Your field is not on the network
Nicoya, Upala, Guápiles, Barra del Colorado, Punta Islita, Palmar Sur. None has scheduled service, and some do not even appear in flight search engines. Where scheduled service exists to a destination, its frequencies and times are set by the airline, not by us.
If your destination is one of these, there is no comparison to make.
3. You are travelling as a group
Here the sums invert. Divide the charter fare among the passengers. With four people the result usually gets close; with six or more it changes sign — and everyone arrives at once rather than split across two departures.
4. You need to go point to point without San José
Scheduled services run radially: almost everything goes through the capital. Charter flies point to point.
San Isidro is 25.4 nautical miles from Quepos, Palmar Sur 17.3 from Drake, Golfito 10.0 from Puerto Jiménez. None of those three can be done on a scheduled service without returning to the Central Valley.
On a southern circuit, that difference is days.
5. You are carrying gear that will not fit
Surfboards, dive equipment, fishing tackle, tripods. Scheduled baggage allowances are strict and bulky kit either pays or stays.
On charter, the conversation is about what it takes up rather than what it weighs — with one honest caveat: at fields like Drake Bay or Barra del Colorado that also limits, and sometimes more. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
What charter does not give you
It is not faster in the air. A Caravan on a scheduled service and one on charter fly at the same speed.
What changes is everything else: you set the hour, the routing is direct, and there is no connection to miss.
And it does not remove runway restrictions. If Drake closes for rain or Islita for the day, it closes for both.
In short
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| One or two passengers, destination on network, times suit | Scheduled |
| Group of four or more | Compare; charter usually wins |
| Field with no scheduled service | Charter, no alternative |
| Circuit without going through San José | Charter |
| Intercontinental arrival the same day | Charter |
Frequently asked questions
Is charter faster in the air?
No. What changes is the departure hour, the direct routing and having no connection to miss.
When does scheduled suit?
With one or two passengers, a destination on the network and compatible times. It is cheaper and we say so.
Which destinations have no scheduled service?
Nicoya, Upala, Guápiles, Barra del Colorado, Punta Islita and Palmar Sur, among others. Where scheduled service exists to a destination, its frequencies and times are set by the airline, not by us.
From how many people does it pay?
With four it gets close; with six or more it changes sign. You pay for the aircraft, not the seat.
Can I go destination to destination without San José?
On charter yes. San Isidro is 25.4 nautical miles from Quepos and Golfito 10.0 from Puerto Jiménez.
And bulky baggage?
On charter the question is what it takes up, not what it weighs. But small fields also limit. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
