The fastest way to get to San Blas

There is a 4x4 route, a boat and short airstrips. But the deciding factor is not transport: it is the permit.

San Blas — Guna Yala, to use its own name — is autonomous territory of the Guna people. That is not a cultural footnote: it is the operational fact that decides the trip, and it comes before any comparison of transport.

First: the permit, not the aircraft

Entering Guna Yala requires authorisation from the Guna congress, and visits are coordinated with authorised local operators. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales.

We do not handle it and we do not replace your operator. And it is not an airport formality: it is a precondition to fixing dates.

Anyone who discovers this late ends up with the flight booked and the destination closed. That is why this page starts here rather than with distances.

It is the same reversed order the catalogue notes at Corcovado and Chirripó: permit first, then the date, and the flight last.

The three ways in

Route Comment
4x4 to Cartí + boat The usual one. Demanding mountain road.
Flight to a Guna Yala airstrip Playón Chico, 81.1 NM from Panama City
Flight to Contadora + sailing 37.2 NM, a different part of the country

By land

From Panama City to Cartí is about three hours by 4x4 on a mountain road with steep gradients and sections that get difficult in rain.

Not every vehicle can do it, and in practice you hire transport rather than drive.

From Cartí, a boat to whichever island you are staying on. The final leg is by boat, run by a third party and dependent on sea conditions. It is an open-water leg that depends on the state of the day.

Three hours of mountain plus sailing: a full day, and not always a comfortable one.

By air

Guna Yala has several airstrips, and they are all short. Playón Chico is 81.1 nautical miles from Panama City.

Here the constraint is not the distance, it is the field. These strips restrict the aircraft severely, and with a group or bulky baggage there may be no suitable one. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

It is the same situation the catalogue describes at Drake Bay: you settle the aircraft first and the destination second, not the other way round.

And the flight does not avoid the boat either: from the strip to your accommodation there is still water in between.

What the flight actually buys

Not speed: it buys not doing the three hours of mountain road.

For anyone arriving intercontinental the same day, or with little tolerance for a demanding road, that is the difference. And it counts for more on the way back, because there is usually a departing flight waiting.

But let us be clear: if the group does not fit, the flight is not an option, however tight the schedule.

When each one

Go by land with two or three people, light baggage and a day of margin. It is the usual way and it works.

Fly if the permit is already settled, the group is small, and the schedule cannot absorb a full day out and another back. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

And under no circumstances book the flight before the permit.
