A private charter to Drake Bay (DRK) costs from 1,395 USD for the whole aircraft, not per passenger. The final figure depends on three variables: where you depart from, which aircraft is assigned, and when you fly. Here is each one.
Charters are quoted per aircraft, not per seat
This is the first thing to understand and the point that causes most confusion when comparing against a commercial ticket.
When you book a charter you are hiring the entire aircraft. The price does not change whether two people travel or all 4 seats are filled. That means the cost per person falls directly as the group grows: the same flight split two ways or six ways produces very different per-head figures.
So the useful question is not "what does the flight cost" but "what does the flight cost divided among us".
Variable 1: the origin
Drake Bay sits at the southwestern corner of Costa Rica, and the distance from your starting point is the single largest cost factor.
| Origin | Distance | Effect on price |
|---|---|---|
| San José (SJO) | 83.5 NM · 155 km | The cheapest of the three |
| La Fortuna / Arenal (FON) | 118.8 NM · 220 km | Intermediate |
| Liberia (LIR) | 159.2 NM · 295 km | Highest: the longest domestic leg in the network |
If your itinerary is flexible, departing from San José rather than Liberia changes the price significantly. The operational detail for each leg is on San José to Drake Bay, Liberia to Drake Bay and La Fortuna to Drake Bay.

Variable 2: the aircraft, and why the choice is narrow here
The Drake Bay runway measures 750 metres by 11 wide. It is among the shortest and narrowest in the Costa Rican domestic network.
That restricts the range of aircraft able to operate the field to high-wing turboprops with short-field capability, flown by crews familiar with it. At destinations with long runways there are more options and therefore more pricing latitude; here there are not.
It is one of the reasons a flight to Drake is not priced like a flight to Liberia or Roatan, even at comparable distance.

Variable 3: the date
Two separate effects.
Season. Osa is a nature destination with pronounced seasonality. In high season, availability of aircraft and of crews current on remote strips is tighter, and booking late either raises the price or closes the option entirely.
Weather. The Osa Peninsula records some of the highest rainfall figures in the country. That does not change the fare, but it does change the planning: Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.
Empty legs: when the price really moves
An empty leg is a sector the aircraft has to fly anyway, without passengers, to reposition. When one coincides with your route and date, the fare can be substantially lower.
The trade-off is that they cannot be planned: they appear at short notice and allow no schedule changes. They suit travellers with flexible dates, not fixed itineraries.
Our empty leg policy and how to check for them: We work with empty legs: they arise from operations already confirmed, are listed at short notice and are not guaranteed. Ask us what is available that day.
What the fare does not include
As a rule our fares cover the flight. We do not quote services that are not ours: accommodation, tours, Corcovado park entry, boat transfers from Agujitas or meals. Many lodges in the area arrange pickup at the strip; confirm that with your accommodation.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a private charter to Drake Bay cost?
From 1,395 USD for the whole aircraft. The final figure depends on origin, the aircraft assigned and the date.
Is the price per person or per aircraft?
Per aircraft. It does not change with passenger count, so the cost per person falls as the group grows.
Which airport is cheapest to fly from?
San José is 83.5 nautical miles out, La Fortuna 118.8 and Liberia 159.3. Shorter distance, lower cost.
Why does it cost more than other destinations at similar distance?
The Drake Bay runway is 750 by 11 metres. That limits which aircraft can operate it and requires crews familiar with the field.
Are empty legs cheaper?
Yes, when a repositioning sector coincides with your route and date. They cannot be planned in advance. We work with empty legs: they arise from operations already confirmed, are listed at short notice and are not guaranteed. Ask us what is available that day.
What does the fare include?
The flight. We do not quote accommodation, tours, park entry or boat transfers, because those are not our services.
