A boat does not wait the way a hotel does. The charter week starts when the crew says it starts, and a guest stuck on a mountain road is not a scheduling inconvenience: it is a day of a week that was paid for in advance. That is the whole reason these transfers exist.
The three marina regions and what serves them
Papagayo, in the north Pacific. The nearest airport is Liberia, 86.9 nautical miles from San José, with a short road transfer to the marina.
The central Pacific, around Herradura and Los Sueños. Reached from San José, where the flight saves the coastal road rather than a whole day.
And the southern Pacific, around Golfito and Puerto Jiménez: Golfito is 100.7 nautical miles from San José and Palmar Sur 76.3, with Drake Bay at 83.5 for the outer coast.
Every one of them ends in a road or water leg. The strip is not the dock, and that last piece belongs in the plan. The final leg is by boat, run by a third party and dependent on sea conditions.
Why the timing is stricter than it looks
Departure windows are set by tide, daylight and the crew's day, not by when the guests finish lunch.
Provisioning has its own clock. Anything joining the boat with the guests — food, wine, a replacement part — has to arrive before the boat does.
And the return is worse than the outbound. A boat coming back late compresses everything, which is why the return flight should have more slack than the outbound one.
What we ask before quoting these
The marina, not the town. Two marinas in the same region can mean different airfields.
Who is joining and where from. Guests often arrive from different countries on the same day.
And the luggage, honestly. Yacht guests travel with soft bags, but also with dive gear, fishing rods, cases of wine and occasionally a spare part in a crate. All of it is volume before it is weight. The allowance is calculated by weight when you quote in the app; tell us if you carry bulky gear.
The two details that decide the day
Daylight at the arrival field. Several regional strips operate by day only, and a boat that wants guests aboard for a sunset departure needs a flight that lands well before it.
And the aircraft's field limits. Some of these strips are short; others are unpaved. That narrows the category before passengers or luggage enter the conversation. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Where flying does not pay
Herradura on a clear weekday, when the road from San José is reasonable and the group is small.
Any marina an hour from a major airport, where the transfer is already short.
We will say so. A flight that saves forty minutes is not worth the coordination on a day that has enough moving parts.
Crew changes, not just guests
Crew rotations are their own booking pattern: fewer people, more luggage, and dates driven by the boat's programme rather than a holiday calendar.
They often need the awkward slot — early morning or the day before a charter — which is usually easier to find than a Saturday midday departure.
Frequently asked questions
Which airport serves Papagayo?
Liberia, 86.9 nautical miles from San José, with a short road transfer to the marina.
How do guests reach the southern marinas?
Through Golfito, 100.7 nautical miles from San José, or Palmar Sur at 76.3, followed by a road or water leg.
Can the flight land at the marina?
No. It lands at an airfield; a road or water transfer completes the trip, and that leg belongs in the plan.
What limits the arrival time?
Daylight at the destination field. Several strips operate by day only.
Can you carry dive gear or provisions?
Usually, as a volume question. Declare rods, cases and crates by size before the aircraft is assigned.
Do you handle crew rotations?
Yes, and they often fit the less popular slots, which are easier to find in busy weeks.
