Starting with what other sites leave out
Peninsula Papagayo, on the northern Guanacaste coast, holds some of the country's highest-end resort inventory. It has no airport and no landing strip.
Air access runs through Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR), which is the reference airport for the entire area: roughly thirteen kilometres from the peninsula, on a short paved road transfer. The next-closest airports — Tamarindo and Nosara — are considerably further and offer no advantage for this destination.
If anyone offers you a "direct flight to Papagayo," they are describing a flight to Liberia. We would rather say so before you book.
Ground transfer to your resort coordinated with the flight
Eighty-seven nautical miles against the road
Overland, San Jose and Guanacaste are separated by the Interamericana Norte and the Tempisque crossing. It runs about 4 hours in normal conditions, with heavy traffic leaving the Central Valley and again around Puntarenas.
The flight settles it in under an hour of air time. The real difference, though, is not raw hours — it is the quality of the arrival. Fly and you reach your Papagayo resort with the whole afternoon ahead. Drive and you arrive tired with day one spent.
For three- or four-night stays at a peninsula resort, that asymmetry is half the case for booking.
Liberia Airport (LIR)
Daniel Oduber Quirós is one of Costa Rica's four international airports and the second most important in the country. It sits eleven kilometres west-southwest of Liberia city at 82 metres elevation, with a single 07/25 runway of 2,750 by 45 metres capable of handling wide-body aircraft. It is operated by Coriport S.A.
In practice that means full infrastructure, operations that are not confined to daytime visual conditions the way regional strips are, and predictability. It is the most straightforward destination in the whole domestic network.
On our transfer procedure from LIR to the peninsula resorts: Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
