Most conversations about aircraft start with the passengers. At these fields they start with the runway, and everything else follows.
The four numbers an operator checks
Width. The one that rules out most and gets looked at least. Punta Islita is eight metres; several Caribbean fields run around twelve. An aircraft whose wingspan or track is too large does not go in, however much length there is to spare.
Usable length. Not the published figure: what remains after displaced thresholds and obstacles on the approach. The two numbers can differ by a good margin.
Surface. Gravel, grass or partial paving change braking distance and wear.
And the surroundings. Terrain, obstacles and approaches that can only be flown in one direction. The surrounding terrain shapes the approach and, with it, which aircraft can work the field.
What makes an aircraft suitable here
Three characteristics, and none of them is power:
High wing and robust gear. Keeps the propeller clear of the surface and tolerates irregularities. It is the design of aircraft that work unpaved fields worldwide.
Short take-off and landing. The Cessna 208 Grand Caravan is a high-wing STOL turboprop, of the type common at airports that only accept small short-field aircraft.
And useful load with margin. On a short field the theoretical maximum load is rarely the operational one: on hot days, in high humidity or at elevated fields the margin narrows and weight has to come off.
The fields that set the catalogue's limit
| Field | Runway | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Drake Bay | 1,000 × 18 m | Generous for the catalogue |
| Barra del Colorado | ~12 m wide | No road, air or river only |
| Tortuguero | No road, river access | 53.4 NM from San José |
| Guna Yala | Island and coastal strips | 81.1 NM from Panama City |
None of these is a minor destination. Drake is the northern entrance to Corcovado; Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado have no road; Guna Yala is among Panama's most sought-after destinations.
What happens when your group does not fit
It is not a no: it is a change of plan worth knowing about in advance.
You go in through the large field and continue by road or water. Palmar Sur, 76.3 nautical miles from San José, does not restrict, and from there Drake is reached by road and boat.
One large flight usually costs less than two small ones, and the group arrives together. It is the usual solution and almost never the one the client expects.
What we verify before confirming
That the assigned aircraft accepts the field in the day's conditions, not only on paper. Before confirming we check that the assigned aircraft accepts the destination field under that date’s forecast conditions.
And if it does not, we tell you with the quote and not at the strip. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Frequently asked questions
What limits more, length or width?
Width, and it is the one least looked at. Eleven metres at Drake Bay rules out much of the fleet.
What makes an aircraft suitable for these fields?
High wing with robust gear, short take-off and landing capability, and useful load with margin.
Is the maximum load the operational one?
Rarely. On hot days, in high humidity or at elevated fields the margin narrows.
Which fields set the limit?
Drake Bay at 1,000 × 18 m, Barra del Colorado at around twelve wide, Tortuguero and the Guna Yala strips.
And if my group does not fit?
You go in through the large field and continue by road or water. Palmar Sur, at 76.3 nautical miles, does not restrict.
Why does no aircraft fit sometimes?
Because width, usable length and useful load can bind together. Eleven metres with six passengers and baggage leaves little room.
When will I know?
With the quote. We verify the aircraft accepts the field in the day's conditions, not only on paper.
