There is a water taxi, and it works
Between Belize City and San Pedro there is regular water taxi service: frequent, well known, and considerably cheaper than any flight.
For a traveller with a flexible schedule and normal baggage, that is the answer. Thirty nautical miles do not justify a charter when the transfers to each aerodrome and the coordination run longer than the air.
We say so on the route's own page, as we do on San Pedro–Caye Caulker, because we would rather you trusted us when we recommend the opposite at Placencia or Guanaja.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
The three cases where it does
Same-day international connection. If you land at Goldson on a long-haul flight and want to be on the caye that afternoon, flying removes the transfer to the dock and the wait for the boat. It is the most common case.
Rough seas. The water taxi depends on conditions that give no notice, and across fifty-five kilometres of open water that shows.
Awkward baggage. Heavy dive kit or board bags complicate boarding a launch more than boarding an aeroplane.
Which Belize City airport
Here the choice matters more than on the catalogue's long routes, and it is worth giving the exact figure.
From Goldson (BZE), the international, it is 29.6 nautical miles. From Belize Municipal (TZA), in the city, it is 27.0.
Two point six of difference on a thirty-mile sector: close to nine per cent of the journey. It is the same effect we flag towards Caye Caulker, where the gap between the two fields reaches a quarter. On short sectors, the departure airport shows.
Even so, the decision remains ground logistics: Goldson if you are connecting from a long-haul, municipal if you are already downtown. The aircraft may need to reposition to the departure aerodrome, and that leg forms part of the quote.
San Pedro is not a minor aerodrome
John Greif II sits at four feet elevation and is a Tropic Air hub. It was simply San Pedro Airport until 2010.
Being an airline hub matters: there is regular movement, infrastructure, and apron coordination with scheduled traffic. It is not an isolated field, and that makes this route run with little friction.
Two continuations from here
Caye Caulker is 11.3 nautical miles away, the shortest sector in Central America in our catalogue — and where we most often recommend the boat.
Placencia is 85.7, and there it does pay: it is the leg where the charter returns most in all of Belize, because it avoids dropping to the capital and climbing back.
Same departure airport, two opposite recommendations. Detail on private flights from Belize City.
