Let us start where no charter website starts: to dive the northern Belize reef, you probably do not need a private flight. Here is why, and where it genuinely changes things. On request per aircraft.
The north is solved by water
Ambergris Caye is 29.6 nautical miles from the international airport (BZE) and Caye Caulker 16.0 from the municipal field (TZA). Those are the shortest distances in the Central American catalogue, and the two cayes are 11.3 apart.
At those distances there is regular water taxi service: frequent, cheap and perfectly comfortable. A diver spending a week in San Pedro or Caye Caulker on a flexible schedule gains very little by flying.
We say so here because it is true, and because we would rather you trusted the pages where we do recommend flying. A recommendation is only worth something if it is sometimes negative.
Where the flight does change things
Placencia and the south. Sixty nautical miles from Belize City, and overland it is a long run on a road that does not forgive timetables. For the southern reef and the south-eastern atolls, the flight is the difference between making tomorrow's dive boat or the day after's.
One operational detail of the field worth knowing: the Placencia apron requires coordination with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air, it has no security, and its CTAF is 122.8. The runway crosses the peninsula east to west. We confirm prior apron coordination with the field in the quote, because it changes with the date and the operation.
International departure day. If your flight home leaves Belize City on a thin margin, a water taxi in rough seas is a real risk against an expensive ticket.
Chaining north and south. San Pedro and Placencia in one trip, by road and water, is a full day of transfer. By air it is sixty nautical miles.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
The interval between diving and flying
As in Honduras, there is a recommended interval between a last dive and flying. In Belize it has a specific consequence: many of the most sought-after dives are full-day boat excursions to the atolls, returning to the caye in the afternoon.
Chaining one of those with a flight the same day rarely works. Plan the flight for the following day. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.
The two Belize City airports
There are two fields and they are not interchangeable: one is the international airport, the other sits much closer to the centre. For a domestic flight to the cayes, the choice affects your ground transfer more than your flight time. The aircraft may need to reposition to the departure aerodrome, and that leg forms part of the quote.
On Caye Caulker: the runway was rebuilt in 2018, following the 2017 suspension of operations. Older references citing that closure are out of date.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to fly to dive at Ambergris Caye?
Usually not. It is 29.6 nautical miles from Belize City and there is regular water taxi service, frequent and cheap.
And Caye Caulker?
Also usually not, except on timing. It is 16.0 nautical miles from the municipal field (TZA) and 11.3 from San Pedro. The runway was rebuilt in 2018.
Where does flying earn its place?
Placencia and the south, some sixty nautical miles out on a long road; international departure day on a thin margin; and chaining north and south in one trip.
Can I dive and fly the same day?
With full-day atoll excursions, usually not. Plan the flight for the following day. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.
What is unusual about the Placencia runway?
It crosses the peninsula east to west, has no security, and the apron requires coordination with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air. Its CTAF is 122.8.
Which Belize airport do flights leave from?
There are two and they are not interchangeable. For domestic flights to the cayes, the choice mainly affects your ground transfer. The aircraft may need to reposition to the departure aerodrome, and that leg forms part of the quote.
