Sixty-three point one nautical miles from the volcano to the Caribbean. It is one of the few routes in the catalogue to a destination with no road, and the only one that chains two operating windows into the same day. From 1,250 USD per aircraft.

Tortuguero has no road
That is the first thing to say, because it changes the whole comparison.
Neither the village nor the national park can be reached overland. The usual way is a drive to a jetty — La Pavona or Caño Blanco — and then a boat through the canals. That is several hours and two modes of transport.
Here the flight is not competing against a comfortable road: it competes against a transfer that is already a small expedition.
Even so, and this is worth saying honestly, plenty of people enjoy that expedition. The canals are part of the Tortuguero experience, and travellers with time do not always want to skip them.
Cloud around the volcano sets the field’s operating window, and it is usually more favourable early in the day.
Landing is not arriving either
The Tortuguero field sits on the sandbar, and from the field to your lodging the final leg is by river. We do not operate it, and it is normally coordinated by the lodge. Access to the lodges is by river and has a last departure of the day that sets your flight time.
It is the same warning we give at Drake Bay and Bocas del Toro, but with a difference here: the boat is neither optional nor avoidable. It is part of the access, not a consequence of where you chose to stay.
Two windows in one day
And this is the peculiarity no other route in the catalogue has so clearly.
Arenal operates on a morning window because of afternoon cloud. The river transfer at Tortuguero also has a last departure.
They are two independent timing constraints to fit into the same day, and we control neither of them fully. The practical consequence is concrete: ask the lodge the time of the last boat first, and only then fix the flight. Cloud around the volcano sets the field’s operating window, and it is usually more favourable early in the day.
Planning the other way round — picking a flight time and trusting the boat to fit — is how itineraries to this destination break.
Volcano and turtles in one trip
This is the combination that sustains the route: Arenal and Tortuguero are Costa Rica's two most visited nature destinations, and they sit on opposite slopes.
Overland, chaining them means dropping to the Central Valley, crossing, and climbing back towards the Caribbean, plus the river leg. A full day at minimum.
By air it is sixty-three nautical miles. It is the La Fortuna hub's argument applied to its most useful case: from the interior you reach either coast without returning to San José.
If you are coming from the Central Valley
From San José it is 53.4 nautical miles, ten fewer. If your trip does not include Arenal, that is the short way and there is no need to come through here.
This route exists for travellers already in La Fortuna who do not want to backtrack.
Frequently asked questions
How long is La Fortuna to Tortuguero?
The flight covers 63.1 nautical miles. Overland you must drop to the Central Valley, cross towards the Caribbean and take a boat through the canals.
Can Tortuguero be reached by road?
No. The usual way is a drive to a jetty and then a boat through the canals, several hours and two modes of transport.
Do I land at my lodge?
No. The field is on the sandbar and the final leg is by river, normally coordinated by the lodge. Access to the lodges is by river and has a last departure of the day that sets your flight time.
What should be coordinated first?
The time of the last boat to the lodge. Only then is the flight fixed, because Arenal operates on a morning window. Cloud around the volcano sets the field’s operating window, and it is usually more favourable early in the day.
Is it better from San José?
It is 53.4 nautical miles, ten fewer. If your trip does not include Arenal, that is the short way.
Is it worth it against the boat?
It depends how much time you have. The canals are part of the Tortuguero experience, and unhurried travellers do not always want to skip them.
