It is the only inland origin in our entire Costa Rican catalogue: every other one sits on a coast or in the Central Valley. That gives it a useful geography and one constraint that governs everything else. From 895 USD per aircraft.

Being in the middle has a concrete advantage
From La Fortuna, almost the whole country is under seventy-five nautical miles away, and the two coasts sit at similar distances: Tortuguero on the Caribbean at 63.1, Quepos on the Pacific at 67.1.
No other origin in the Costa Rican catalogue has that symmetry. From San José or Liberia there is always one coast near and another far.
The practical consequence: if your itinerary includes Arenal in the middle, from here you can continue anywhere without returning to the Central Valley. It is the same role David plays in Panama.
Cloud around the volcano sets the field’s operating window, and it is usually more favourable early in the day.
And one constraint that governs everything
The Arenal field operates on a morning window because of afternoon cloud. That is not a recommendation: it is why almost every flight from here departs early.
It changes planning in a real way. A flight from La Fortuna is scheduled backwards from the morning, not forwards from your preferred hour. If your lodging is forty minutes from the field, the day starts earlier than you expect. Cloud around the volcano sets the field’s operating window, and it is usually more favourable early in the day.
It is this origin's most decisive constraint, more than any distance in the table.
And it works both ways: return flights to La Fortuna fall in the same slot. Anyone wanting to make the most of a last day at the beach is better off planning an extra night than a late flight back.
Where we do not recommend flying
To San José, except for a tight international connection. It is 36.1 nautical miles with a main highway, and the transfer to the field eats much of the advantage.
To Liberia, for the same reason: 57.5 nautical miles and a drivable road.
Where flying genuinely changes things from here is towards the southern Pacific and the Caribbean: Drake Bay at 118.8 nautical miles and Tortuguero at 63.1 are destinations that cost a full day overland, or have no road at all.
Two destinations with chained access
Tortuguero cannot be reached by road: the final leg is by river, and we do not operate it.
Drake Bay ends on the most demanding strip in the catalogue, 750 metres by 11 wide, with an onward transfer to the lodge.
In both cases, confirm the final leg before fixing the flight time. Detail on transfer to your lodge.
