The classic Costa Rica itinerary, minus the lost day
Beach and volcano is the pairing that structures most trips to Costa Rica. Guanacaste first, Arenal second, or the other way round. The problem is the middle: the Guanacaste mountain range separates the two, and the road goes around it, finishing with the shoreline of Lake Arenal — scenic, narrow and relentlessly curved.
By air the range is simply crossed. Sixty-six miles in a straight line becomes a flight of well under half an hour, and the day that was going to be spent in transit becomes a day of excursions instead.
This is comfortably the strongest commercial argument in the whole domestic network. What is being sold is not speed; it is an extra night of usable itinerary. On a ten-day trip, recovering two full days — one at each transfer — changes the shape of the holiday.

Arenal Airport (FON)
Arenal is a privately managed airstrip in open country, four miles east of La Fortuna and reached via Route 141. It sits at 342 feet and has an 800-metre asphalt runway — a length that defines what can operate there. It is a field commonly served by high-wing turboprops such as the Cessna 208 Caravan and the DHC-6 Twin Otter.
One characteristic detail: the approach to runway 24 crosses over a hangar at the beginning of the runway. It makes no difference to the passenger, but it does explain why crews assigned to this route need to know the field.
From the strip into La Fortuna town and the hot springs area the transfer is short. Lodges out on the volcano flank and toward the lake sit further away, so tell us your exact property at booking and we will confirm the ground leg before you fly.
Aircraft, baggage and the operating window
Cessna 206, 4 seats, baggage hold 40 cu ft.
Arenal operates in daylight, under visual conditions. Northern Costa Rica has a weather pattern of its own: the volcano flank generates cloud regularly, particularly in the afternoon. On this route specifically we recommend a morning departure wherever the itinerary allows. It is not an airport limitation — it is the microclimate.
On confirmed weather-related closures: Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.
Onward connections
If your itinerary continues to the coast after Arenal, there is no need to route back through Liberia. We operate La Fortuna to Tamarindo and La Fortuna to Drake Bay, which allows a full circuit with no repeated legs.
From the capital, the equivalent route is San José to La Fortuna, the usual choice for travellers entering through SJO.
