San Jose has two airports, and it matters
This is the point that causes the most confusion and can save you the most time.
Juan Santamaría (SJO) is the main international gateway, in Alajuela, with a 3,012-metre runway at an elevation of 921 metres. If you arrive on an international flight, you land here. Departing from the same field avoids an inter-airport transfer.
Tobías Bolaños (SYQ) sits in the Pavas district inside San Jose city and is the Central Valley's domestic and general-aviation airport. It has a single runway of 1,566 by 23 metres at 1,002 metres elevation.
The practical rule: if you are connecting from an international flight the same day, SJO. If you are already staying in San Jose or Escazú, SYQ is usually closer by road. The air-distance difference to Arenal is a little over four nautical miles, so this is a ground-logistics decision rather than a flight-time one.
Our Central Valley departure base: The aircraft may need to reposition to the departure aerodrome, and that leg forms part of the quote.
We'll confirm whether SJO or SYQ suits you better
Thirty-six nautical miles of mountain range
The air distance to Arenal is short, but the road does not travel it in a straight line. It climbs north out of the Central Valley, crosses the highlands around San Ramón or Zarcero depending on the variant, and drops down to the San Carlos plain. It runs about 3.5 hours in normal conditions, with frequent fog on the high passes and heavy vehicles on the mountain sections.
Flying turns that half-day into under thirty minutes. On itineraries that start in San Jose and continue to the coast, this first leg sets the rhythm for everything after it: arriving at Arenal mid-morning on day one buys a full afternoon of hot springs or volcano that simply does not exist on the road version.
Arenal Airport (FON)
Privately managed airstrip, 342 feet elevation, 800-metre asphalt runway, four miles east of La Fortuna via Route 141. The runway length restricts it to high-wing turboprops such as the Cessna 208 Caravan and DHC-6 Twin Otter, and the approach to runway 24 crosses a hangar at the threshold.
Daytime, visual operations. The volcano flank builds cloud regularly through the afternoon, so we recommend a morning departure wherever the itinerary allows. On confirmed weather closures: Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.
