Forty-one kilometres that are not forty-one kilometres
Here is the reason for this route, and it does not show on the map.
In a straight line, Nosara and Tamarindo are almost adjacent. Overland, the journey skirts estuaries and stretches of unpaved road, and in the rainy season its duration stops being predictable. Part of the access road is gravel and its condition worsens in the rainy season.
It is the same pattern as Nosara–Santa Teresa: the flight does not save kilometres, it saves a journey the geography does not offer in a straight line.
Even so, be honest with yourself before booking: in the dry season, with a suitable vehicle and no hurry, the road works. It is in the rains, in a group, or with boards that the flight changes the day.
The field operates in daylight and visual conditions, and the rainy season narrows the usable hours.
The shortest sector in Costa Rica in our network
Twenty-two point four nautical miles. It is shorter than Liberia–Tamarindo, which is 23.2.
And that brings the usual consequence on short sectors: time in the air stops being the factor. The transfers to each aerodrome and the coordination weigh more than the flight, and over twenty-two nautical miles the price does not drop proportionally.
If your calculation was "half an hour of flying against three on the road", adjust: the half hour is right, but the day is not saved whole.
Tamarindo closes often
It is the warning we repeat on every page for this destination, and on such a short route it matters more than usual.
The Tamarindo field closes often in the rainy season. The field operates in daylight and visual conditions, and the rainy season narrows the usable hours.
On a twenty-two-mile sector, a closure is not solved by diverting to a nearby field and carrying on: it returns you to your starting point, or leaves you with the same ground transfer you wanted to avoid. Ask about the fallback plan when booking, not afterwards.
And a question worth asking first
If your trip starts outside the country, this route may be unnecessary.
Liberia is 23.2 nautical miles from Tamarindo and 37.6 from Nosara. Entering through Liberia puts both destinations a short hop away and removes the need to chain two beaches by air.
The decision that really matters is which airport you enter through, and it is taken weeks before this enquiry. Detail on private flights from Liberia.
