Coiba is remote for a reason, and that reason is its value

Coiba National Park is one of the most cited dive destinations in the eastern tropical Pacific. Its isolation — it was a penal colony for decades, which kept the island undeveloped — is precisely what preserved its marine biodiversity.

Santa Catalina, in Veraguas Province, is the departure point for Coiba and a recognised surf destination in its own right. It has no public airport. The reference field is Ruben Cantu (SYP), in Atalaya District near Santiago de Veraguas, from which the trip continues by road to the coast.

On closer alternative airstrips near Santa Catalina and their operational availability: We confirm the available entry field in the quote, because it changes with the date and the operation.

Ground transfer to Santa Catalina coordinated with the flight

Ninety-eight nautical miles against the Interamericana

By road, the trip from Panama City runs west on the Interamericana to Santiago and then drops toward the coast on secondary roads. That is several hours in normal conditions, on a heavy-freight corridor with a final stretch of lower quality.

For a dive trip the arithmetic is simple: every day lost to the road is a day of diving lost, and Coiba outings are organised as full days out of Santa Catalina. Arrive the previous afternoon and you dive the next morning. Arrive at dusk and you don't.

For surfers, though, it is worth saying plainly: this is a less clear-cut decision than on other routes in the catalogue. Where a mountain range or a border stands in the way — David to Bocas, Liberia to Costa Esmeralda — the answer is the same for almost everyone. Here it depends on what half a day is worth to you.

Albrook Airport (PAC)

Marcos A. Gelabert is Panama City's domestic airport, barely a kilometre and a half west of downtown, on the site of the former Albrook Air Force Station. It sits at 31 feet above sea level with a single runway, 1/19.

It is the natural starting point for almost all Panamanian domestic aviation: Bocas del Toro, David, Contadora, Pedasí and much of the Guna Yala airstrip network are flown from here. Its advantage over Tocumen is obvious for anyone already in the city — the transfer from downtown is measured in minutes.

Albrook publishes a METAR, which in practice means reliable weather information before each departure.

Aircraft and operations

Aircraft assigned on confirmation, 4–12 seats, baggage confirmed at booking by weight and volume.

Ruben Cantu sits at 83 metres elevation inland in Veraguas. It is a military and public field serving Atalaya District.

Dive equipment is the usual oversized load on this route. Tanks, weights and underwater camera gear must be declared at booking: they affect both the weight calculation and the aircraft assigned.

On weather-related closures at the destination field: Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.
