Sixaola is the alternative, and it is not a comfortable one
Overland access to Bocas del Toro from Costa Rica runs along the Caribbean coast to the Sixaola border crossing, then continues on the Panamanian side to Almirante, where a boat is required to reach Isla Colón.
That is three chained stages: road, border, boat. Each with its own timetable and its own variability. For a traveller leaving San Jose it is a full day at minimum, with plenty of room to become a day and a half if anything fails to line up.
The flight settles it in a single stage that lands a kilometre and a half from the centre of Bocas Town. No boat, no border queue, no transfer from Almirante.
We handle departure and entry formalities
Isla Colón Airport (BOC)
A public international airport operated by Panama's Autoridad Aeronáutica Civil, 1.5 kilometres northwest of the centre of Bocas del Toro on Isla Colón, three metres above sea level.
Its proximity to town is its defining feature and the reason this route works so well: there is no meaningful ground transfer, no additional sea crossing and no dead time between the apron and the hotel.
It hosts daily flights from Panama City and from San José, which means it is a field with routine international traffic and established procedures — not a remote airstrip served by exception.
On confirmed weather-related closures: Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.
An honest seasonal note: Bocas del Toro sits on the Caribbean side, and its rainfall pattern does not match the Costa Rican Pacific. The dry months on the Pacific are not necessarily the dry months here. If your itinerary combines both coasts, plan this leg with that asymmetry in mind.
Immigration and customs
This is an international flight between Costa Rica and Panama, with formalities at both ends. Documentation requirements, flight plan filing deadlines, fees and customs service hours: Departure and entry formalities vary by country and need lead time; we coordinate them with every passenger’s details.
Connections within Panama
From Bocas del Toro we operate to David, gateway to the Chiriquí highlands and Boquete, and to San Blas for travellers wanting to cover both Panamanian Caribbean coasts without returning to the capital.
