Four nautical miles that change the day
Here is the figure that decides this route, and it is subtler than usual.
Direct is 238.1 nautical miles. Via Panama City it is 242.1: four more. In distance, practically the same.
But the capital routing is two flights with a stop in between, with its transfer, its wait and its coordination. Direct is one.
The difference is not in the air, it is in the day. It is the same logic as Quepos–Drake Bay, where the detour via San José costs one hundred and seventeen nautical miles instead of fifty-two. Here the detour barely costs distance, and it still costs half a day.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Why something so close is so far
Panama runs west to east, not north to south as people tend to picture it. Bocas del Toro sits against the Costa Rican border; Guna Yala, near the Colombian one.
Both are on the Panamanian Caribbean, and almost the whole country fits between them.
Worth knowing when planning: many people assume two Caribbean destinations in the same country are close together, and here that is wrong by a considerable factor.
The comarca has its own rules
Guna Yala is an indigenous comarca with its own government, with access rules, fees and authority of its own, handled with the comarca rather than with civil aviation.
These are not symbolic formalities and they do not depend on us. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales.
This flight also does not drop you on your island: from the field to the island you go by boat, and that leg is normally coordinated by the lodging. The final leg is by boat, run by a third party and dependent on sea conditions.
Detail on charter to San Blas and Guna Yala.
And the origin is not a single point either
Bocas del Toro is an archipelago. The airport is on Isla Colón, but if you are staying on Bastimentos, Carenero or Solarte, the day starts with a boat before you reach the aeroplane. The final leg is by boat, run by a third party and dependent on sea conditions.
It is a route with chained access at both ends, which is uncommon even in this catalogue. Confirm both transfers before fixing the flight time, and ask at both ends what time the last one leaves.
When it makes sense
When your trip wants both faces of the Panamanian Caribbean and you do not have a week to spend on transfers.
It does not make sense if you are passing through Panama City anyway. In that case the two separate legs are the natural option, and each has its own page.
