This is not insurance advice, and we do not sell insurance. Read your own policy and put the specific questions below to your insurer. For Belize, three clauses matter more than usual: medical evacuation, diving, and weather. AeroRide sells flights, not insurance: confirm cover with your insurer.
Medical evacuation: the clause that matters most
Medical facilities in Belize are limited, especially on the islands and in the south, and official advisories note that serious injuries often require evacuation to another country.
That makes evacuation cover the single most important line in a Belize policy. Miami, the nearest major medical hub for many visitors, is 667.2 nautical miles from the international airport; an evacuation over that distance is expensive without cover.
Ask your insurer three things: whether evacuation is included, what the limit is, and whether it covers transfer from the islands to the mainland as well as the international leg.
Diving: the depth clause
Many policies cover recreational diving only to a set depth, often tied to your certification level.
The Great Blue Hole's main dive goes deeper than many policies allow. If you plan to do it, check the depth limit and the certification requirement in writing before you travel.
Check also whether dive-related treatment is covered, including decompression care, and whether you need a specialist dive policy in addition to your travel insurance.
Weather: hurricanes and cancelled trips
The hurricane season runs from June to November. Most policies cover disruption from a storm only if the policy was bought before the storm was named. We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost.
Small planes and boats are grounded by weather more easily than jets, and a missed international connection after a cancelled island flight is a plausible claim. Check what your policy says about missed connections and whether the delay threshold is realistic for island travel.
Activity clauses
Snorkelling and boat trips are usually covered; check that yours are.
Cave tours and cave tubing, which some policies treat as higher-risk activities. The demanding cave tours involve wading, swimming and climbing.
Zip-lining and river kayaking, sometimes excluded or limited.
Transport clauses
Travel on small scheduled aircraft and licensed charters is normally covered as public or commercial transport; check the wording if your policy distinguishes between them.
Water taxis are generally treated the same way. Check the wording for any exclusion.
The advisory clause
Many policies limit or void cover for travel against a government advisory.
For Belize, the stronger warnings apply to a specific district of Belize City rather than to the country as a whole, but advisory levels differ by nationality and change. Read your policy's wording and your own government's current advisory. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.
What people wrongly assume
That the tour operator's insurance covers you. It covers their liability, not your medical bills.
That credit-card cover is enough. Sometimes; more often the evacuation limits are lower than a Belize trip needs.
That "worldwide" means everywhere and every activity. Diving and adventure activities are often excluded unless added.
What we can tell you, and what we can't
We can tell you which of your destinations are remote and what an unscheduled move means operationally: Ambergris is 29.6 nautical miles from the international airport, Placencia 60.3. That helps you ask your insurer a precise question. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
We cannot tell you whether you are covered.
Frequently asked questions
Is this insurance advice?
No. We don't sell insurance. This lists the questions to ask your own insurer about Belize.
What clause matters most for Belize?
Medical evacuation. Facilities are limited, and serious injuries often require evacuation abroad.
Does my policy cover the Great Blue Hole dive?
Check the depth limit. The main dive goes deeper than many policies allow.
Am I covered for hurricanes?
Usually only if the policy was bought before the storm was named. Check the wording.
Are small planes covered?
Scheduled flights and licensed charters normally are. Check whether your policy distinguishes between them.
Does the advisory clause apply to Belize?
It depends on your nationality and the current advisory. The stronger warnings cover one district of Belize City.
