Belize entry requirements

A country that sits outside the Central American free-movement area, with its own stay rules, exit fees and border crossings.

Entering Belize is procedurally simple for most visitors, but it works differently from its neighbours. Belize is not part of the CA-4, the free-movement area shared by Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Its entry and exit rules are its own, and a regional trip crosses a real border each time it enters or leaves.

Rules change, and faster than an article can follow. Confirm the current position with Belize's immigration authorities or your airline before relying on anything below. We do not advise on visas; we do tell you the formalities at each end of the flight.

Belize and the CA-4

Time spent in Belize does not count against the CA-4 allowance, and time in the CA-4 does not count in Belize.

Crossing from Belize into Guatemala means Guatemalan entry formalities, and returning means Belizean ones again. For Tikal, that matters: Flores is 96.9 nautical miles from Belize's international airport.

Planning a multi-country trip means tracking two separate allowances rather than one.

How long you can stay

Visitors from many countries receive a tourist stay on arrival, typically for a limited period that can be extended through the immigration department.

Check whether your nationality needs a visa in advance. Some do, and requirements differ by passport.

Extensions are handled by immigration, not at a border, and are best started before you need them.

What gets checked

A passport with enough validity. Six months beyond entry is the common standard, and airlines enforce it.

Onward or return travel, checked by airlines at boarding and sometimes on arrival.

Proof of accommodation and sufficient funds, which the first night's booking and a card normally settle.

Leaving Belize

Belize charges departure fees. On international flights they are usually included in the ticket; at land borders, they are generally paid on exit.

Check what your ticket includes, and carry some cash when leaving overland. We don't quote amounts here because they change and depend on how you leave.

The land and sea borders

To the north, the crossing into Mexico serves the road to the Yucatán.

To the west, the crossing near Benque Viejo serves Guatemala and Tikal.

To the south, boat services link southern Belize with Guatemala and Honduras. Use only official services with proper immigration processing: an irregular entry is a serious problem anywhere.

By air, regional hops replace some crossings: San Pedro Sula is 64.3 nautical miles from Punta Gorda, and Roatán 106.8 from Placencia, each with formalities at both ends. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

Money, which isn't an entry rule but gets asked

The Belize dollar is pegged to the US dollar, and US dollars are widely accepted. Prices may be quoted in either, so always confirm which.

What else gets asked

Vaccinations. Requirements depend on where you are travelling from, not on Belize itself. Check with a travel health service.

Language. English is the official language, which makes the paperwork straightforward.

Travel advisories, which are not entry rules but affect some insurance policies. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

Arriving from far away

Most long-haul visitors arrive via the United States: Miami is 667.2 nautical miles from Belize's international airport, and several US hubs have direct flights. Check transit rules for any connection.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Belize?

Visitors from many countries do not, but requirements differ by passport. Confirm with Belize's immigration authorities or your airline before travel.

Is Belize part of the CA-4?

No. Time in Belize is counted separately, and crossing into Guatemala or Honduras means formalities each way.

Is there a departure tax?

Yes. It is usually included in international air tickets and paid separately at land borders.

How long can I stay?

Tourists typically receive a limited stay on arrival, extendable through the immigration department.

What currency does Belize use?

The Belize dollar, pegged to the US dollar. US dollars are widely accepted; confirm which currency a price is in.

Can I cross to Guatemala by boat?

Only on official services with proper immigration processing.
