Business Travel in Honduras

The commercial capital and the political one are ninety miles and a different world apart. Where the work is, what goes wrong, and the transfer that decides the day.

Honduras splits its business life between two cities that are 93,0 nautical miles apart and do different things. San Pedro Sula is the commercial capital; Tegucigalpa is the political one, and a trip that needs both is a trip with a built-in transfer problem.

Where the work is

San Pedro Sula and the Sula valley hold manufacturing, the textile and apparel maquilas, and the agro-industrial base. It is the busier airport and the one most business visitors use.

Puerto Cortés, north of it, is the largest port on the Central American Caribbean and the logistics centre that goes with it.

Tegucigalpa is government, regulators, ministries and the institutional work. If your business is licensing, permitting or public sector, this is where it happens.

And La Ceiba at 64,3 nautical miles from San Pedro Sula covers the agro-export corridor and the tourism sector on the coast.

What goes wrong

Assuming one city covers both. A meeting in each means the 93,0-nautical-mile hop or a mountain road, and the road is not a half-day.

The approach into Tegucigalpa, which is in a valley surrounded by terrain and is a field pilots discuss. Weather there affects schedules more than it does at San Pedro Sula.

And the arrival transfer. A late international landing followed by a city transfer is the part of a Honduras business trip that most reliably goes badly, and it is entirely plannable. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

What works better than expected

San Pedro Sula's connectivity. For a Central American business hub it has more direct international service than its size suggests, largely because of the maquila sector.

The hotel supply in both cities is adequate and business-oriented rather than tourist-oriented, which means the standards hold in low season.

And the working day, which starts early. A nine o'clock meeting is normal and a two o'clock one is late.

Where flying earns its place

San Pedro Sula to Tegucigalpa, which is the clearest case in the country: 93,0 nautical miles against a mountain road that costs most of a day each way.

Roatán at 96,1, for the tourism and property sectors, where the alternative is road plus ferry.

And multi-country weeks. Guatemala City at 159,8 nautical miles from San Pedro Sula makes a two-country week realistic, which it is not by road. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

Security, practically

The picture differs sharply by city and by neighbourhood, and this is the area where general statements about Honduras are least useful.

What applies consistently for business visitors: arranged transport rather than street taxis, daylight movement between cities, hotels in the business districts, and asking your local counterpart about specific areas rather than the city.

Check your own government's current advice before you plan, and note that some corporate travel policies restrict travel against advisories regardless of your own assessment. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

Before you travel

Who approves the trip, because procurement rules decide what you can book and often need supplier documentation in advance. AeroRide invoices and charges directly from the site; you receive your receipt in the name of the person or company you give us on confirmation.

Whether your destination fields operate at your hours. Several regional strips are daylight-only, which constrains an evening return more than people expect.

And the return leg. Build it around the international departure rather than the last meeting. A tight connection after a city transfer is how these trips end badly.
